Inconsisten converting to station with merge block

I have a rover with a drilling ship attached at the back configured as such.(https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1940635003)cce3a49ce2098b6ba33b410982ea912e

When it is connected to a regular station the configurations works as expected and there are no issues.

I convert the rover to a station by raising it up with pistons. However before I convert the rover I disconnect the mining ship and let it hang on with just landing gear, when the rover have become a station I reconnect the mining ship with both merge blocks and connectors.


The issue is when I activate the mining ship the part of the ship that the merge block connected to disconnects from the rover, that part of the mining ship becomes a station, which again leads to two pistons pushing against a station block and that summons clang.

None of this is an issue with a regular station.
