hand welding projections inconsistency

In the new update when hand welding a projection I would like to only put in only 1 plate not all at once quickly depleting my inventory of plates. previously you could time it and only put in the first component now I have to fight with it breaking it back down with the grinder and re tapping it with the welder for such effect.
Is this intentional? I could understand if it was for the tiered upgraded hand tools but not the slow starter hand welder?
