Dedicated server K_EResultTimeout when downloading any mod

Solved

good evening support,

since 1/6/2021 around 12pm EST, dedicated server 1.197.073 has been unable to download ANY mods from the workshop. tested on two previously-working windows instances a few times a day since then.

per normal server mod cache cleanup process, I have tried deleting C:\ProgramData\SpaceEngineersDedicated\<Instancename>\appworkshop_244850.acf file and the content\244850 folder

before and after cleanup, the result is the same for trying to download any mod updates or new mods in load order;

2021-01-07 10:01:05.738: Workshop item with id 2121919067 download finished. Result: k_EResultTimeout

2021-01-07 10:01:05.738: Up to date mod: Id = 2121919067, title = 'WEC - Encounters Reborn'

I have heard other community server admins having the same issue on the Keen discord server, so there might be a server issue on your end or on Valve's end.

If there are any other troubleshooting steps you'd like me to do or any diagnostic info you'd like me to provide, please let me know. thank you.

This is still happening on 1/8/21. what's the cause?

Still happening on 1/9/21. no response from Keen?

I'm still getting k_EResultTimeout when dedicated server tries to download mods. Is there an availability issue on valve's end you can confirm and escalate to their support team? does Keen need to make an adjustment or fix to their server software? are they trying to use an old hostname to contact steamcommunity or something, leading to a timeout?

response from a third-party hosting provider support. keen needs to implement a fix in server software because of a change on steam's end.

Hello engineers,

Thanks for reporting this to us, we have been already able to reproduce this. This is a problem for servers running as a service only. So meanwhile, switch to local/console if possible when hosting servers with mods, until the fix arrives. Local/console does not have this problem.

This is happening to me in local/console mode. Not just running as a service

Hello, everyone!

This issue was caused by Steam due to an update. We need to release a game update that adapts to these changes and we are working to fix this as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you both for acknowledging this, and look forward to a hotfix. I will attempt the workaround, but that may not be feasible on our setup. thank you.

If it means anything, I did a fresh server installation. Using Local/console has the same effect.

I downloaded torch, and it appears to not have any issues downloading mods.

We have this issue on our low.ms server. Only found that the modular encounters mods are working. Anything else causes the game to get stuck in an infinite "loading world" loop.

Any news one when this might be resolved?

If you need a fix for this before Keen decides to update the game at some point, use torch, it will fix this problem

I have no idea what torch is and how to use it sadly.

Ive seen some things which mention torch in the mod list of the low.ms control panel but have no idea what it is.

:(

Noddy guide anywhere?

torch has the same issue for me, even in single player i get mod errors when loading into a world

That’s a totally different problem. The problem this thread is about is that dedicated server wasn’t starting up due to failure to download mods on the server side. If your space engineers CLIENT won’t load mods that’s totally different.

Just to say, since this wasn't getting fixed, i've migrated my dedicated server to torch, and i can confirm it's a pretty painless migration, and doesn't break saves or existing world.

Just download the zip, extract (to a sane file path, not in downloads!), run the executable, wait for it to download all the SE stuff from Steam, quit Torch, copy the saves, re-launch Torch, copy-paste a few things like server name 'n such from the previous SEDS config, then it's ready to go.

It downloaded all mods without fail for me, it lacked a few features like auto-restart and MOTD out of the box, but once you get the essential plugins it pretty much does all what the official SEDS server did, with some nice extras.

I do not consider migrating to Torch to be a solution to this problem. the software provided by Keen needs to meet its basic functions.

And Keen has stated a fix is in progress. As fellow users we’re just letting you know that Torch is a workaround while we wait for the official fix

Issue resolved in 1.197.074. tysm Keen support for addressing this :)
