(or removing them) if so, this works in creative but not survival which I have just tested. Could you please explain further if this is/is not the problem you are facing?

Hey Laura, sorry to bother you I actually figured out a work around already. I unfortunately don't know how to resolve or delete this thread.
I was meaning in creative mode (as I understand that functionality doesn't work in survival unless you have creative tools on) which I was able to do before with just the hotkeys but for whatever reason it wasn't working. I had to go into options/game and switch "build mode" from "single block" to "plane" and that then allowed me to use the hotkeys as intended.
