Character Sliding across grids

Simon Sejer Nielsen shared this bug 6 years ago
Solved

Just about a year ago I experienced a bug like this - I havent had it for a few weeks now (started playing again a few weeks ago), though today I experienced it happening again, I can't move forward when it comes to sloped blocks, and when I land on a horizontal flat plane I keep sliding towards the direction which I was moving in before I landed.

The character will keep sliding until he lands on flat ground on a planet or hit another grid.

This is grid specific, so I can walk up onto another grid and not have this issue, while the issue persist on where it first happend.

The only thing that fixes this, temporarily mind you, is restarting/reloading the server/map.

This happens both in singleplayer and multiplayer, both dedicated and locally hosted multiplayer sessions.

I provided a link below to my original post a year ago - since its still relevant to this day.

If you need a newer version of a map then let me know.

I'm having this issue with a large grid in a singleplayer world. The problem persists even if the grid is copied to another world. I tried dissecting the grid but the sliding just occurs on the piece with the most blocks. Reloading the world is a bandaid fix and everything is fine for about 3 minutes. very frustrating.

I've seen this bug in the past and I thought it had gone away until today. After playing for a few hours on public test Keen #4 the Avatar seems to travel across the planet surface just fine. As I started to expand and build and started walking on placed blocks more often I started to notice that my character was sliding. Which is causing me to have to constantly have the jet pack on to be able to do anything. This slide is also happening on small grids as well.

The bug is still live and i can't have a second without experiencing it.

I posted a bug report of something similar/the same. What I've seen is that my character will "skip" when landing from hydrogen thrusters. This seems to coincide with the issue of sliding on sloped blocks and also feet "sticking" when walking across a grid. I've noticed the character model will seem to be standing on tiptoes when this happens. As with the OP this issue seems to have happened inconsistently and is sometimes fixed by reloading my save and sometimes not. Either way it seems to reappear randomly and, once it presents, does not go away consistently. Please fix this. This has been the number one issue making it hard for me to play the game I love.

Don't forget to upvote - its unfortunate that this bug has made it into full release :(

Consider what? I've seen post from a year ago claiming that this was happening, just fix it. You literally cannot walk on the ground you have to use jetpacks the entire time, you need more proof? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3wM0h8OMrQ.

This is easier to reproduce if you connect/disconnect other grids through connector.

Static grid becomes "tilted" a tiny little bit and you can't walk on some slopes. Sometimes you can't walk at all and just slide.

Happens in multiplayer and in local game.

Fix it god damn it this bug exist for YEARS already and it's ANNOYING AS FUCK.

Any workaround or temporary fix for this? I can do nothing at all in the base I just finished :(

photo

Only thing ive had work, and yet only very temporary is simply restarting the server (if thats what you're playing on)

If that doesnt work, then I don't know, try and copy/paste the base elsewhere and see if that works - though I know this is also only a temporary fix

I have had some luck pressing cap locks and walking around. As soon as I sprint, jump, or uncaplock to walk fast I slide.

For now I have been making most of my important machines accessible from off the grid standing on the planet.

I imagine another option is to make your base on wheels / thrusters as the issue doesn't appear to affect ships and only happens on stations.

Dev's should consider this a major bug if they expect people to build on planets or make anything static...

photo

"the issue doesn't appear to affect ships" Happens on ships for me as well

photo

Yeah, i've had it happen to a ship as well now :-/

Still happens.

Let me assure yall of one thing, this IS one of yalls "most serious" bugs.

I've just encountered this the other day and it has kept me from playing the game AT ALL. I don't have a degree in computer science, but I cant tell you that this is one of the most flawed and probably the most simple to fix, yet I'm reading posts of people having this problem for years. I don't mean to come across as rude, because I am a very patient and kind person, but this is absolutely pathetic that this but is still here. I understand some bugs can reappear after some changes, but It should be fixed, and not months or years later, I did pay for the game after all.

This issue is alive and kicking! I'm new to the game, but loving it. After playing for 97 hours this is the first bug I've encluntered, but it's made my entire effort useless. I can't walk anywhere on my base now without running into imaginary walls, getting stuck in place, or sliding on the blocks. Also, if I make my character jump in 3rd person he jumps, but them hangs in mid-air just above the grid for about a second before he lands. It's like the game can't remember where the blocks are and has to recalculate where the animation is supposed to end or something. I don't record gameplay so I can't provide the example, but if you fix the issues above I'm sure it will fix mine too.

Same issue as the above. Also, when I tried to drive a vehicle onto the grids, parts of the vehicle that went onto the grid exploded. Tried it again, with different vehicle and vehicle acted like I was trying to drive it into a solid object. So I can't walk on there without skipping and my vehicles don't like it either. Please fix. It is very annoying.

Hi Keen,

Looks like this has started happening again recently. I started experiencing it on a station I am working on currently. When stationary on the grid, my velocity is jumping like crazy, around 0.5-10 m/s, so seems like the issue stems from 'static' grids moving...

I do have sub-grids on the station, they are used to offset some blocks aesthetically. I have messed around with sharing inertia tensor but have not had consistent results. Initially it was taking 0.5-1 seconds to 'land' after jumping / jetpacking around, however now I continue to slide indefinitely unless my player velocity is < 1m/s when it then lets me land on the grid. Also happens if I turn while walking / running. I realise that I am probably pushing something somewhere and that is why thew grid has developed a phantom velocity, but 20 mins ago it was perfectly fine. I don't have any sim speed or lag issues. Playing SP as well so it's not lag related, on earth like planet in survival so not artificial gravity either.

I have tried attaching control panels to my sub-grids, and converting them to stations as well so that they are not moving. No improvement with or without share inertia tensor. (actually, on reload with the sub-grids converted to stations it appears to be much better and have had it once since reload.)

As mentioned above, seems to me that the 'static' grid has developed a phantom velocity and that's causing issues with the landing mechanics as it can't match player avatar speed to the grid speed unless moving very slowly (<1m/s).

I also have this issue when I finish making the refinery, I tried to disconnect it from the main grid and make a sub grid just for the refineries with pistons and connectors, which somehow stopped this odd bug. However I tried placing a new refinery on the main grid and the bug is back. Hopefully this can help a little on your search to figure out what can be causing this sliding glitch.

I have this issue as well. It doesn't happen when I first load in, only after I've been playing a while then it seems to get progressively worse. It is most noticeable when transitioning from jetpack to the grid...my character will hover over the grid for a second like it's falling when you turn the jetpack off and try to land, then it will land on the grid and sometimes slide right off unless I hit the jet pack again. Yet, sometimes it will land correctly and walk. Exiting and reloading works for a bit, then the bug comes back. I haven't noticed any differences between subgrids & grids per se, but then again I'm pretty new to SE and I don't quite understand the relationships between the two very well yet and haven't even used the "Convert to station/ship" command yet. Whichever the case, it is a plague & a nuisance to deal with! I forgot to mention that when all of this happens my character is just as likely to fall through the grid and start walking around on the ground & through the blocks like they're not even there. These two issues seem to be linked...

this is an issue again same as above not on first load but anything after abound 5 minuets

Come on, Keen, get a move on. This is a game breaking bug in a full release game. That is unacceptable. This isn't an issue that you should "consider", this is an issue that you should fix immediatley. It doesn't matter how many votes it gets in this ridiculous bug reporting system of yours.

photo

Definitely have this bug on my dedicated server on our large static grid bases. Sometimes it seems better for a while and I'm not sure why, but the issue definitely keeps coming back.

photo

I get this behavior (sliding on the grid) on my large grid ship. And it's boring, because at the end of the platform, without moving, I fall... But on the ground, no sliding problem.

In addition: Even in jetpack, without moving, without touching anything, my avatar moves in the atmosphere at about 0.1 m/s

Hello,

We are still unable to reproduce the issue. If you have a world, where it happens even after restart, could you upload it? I tried to download the file from the start of the thread, it is not available anymore though.

Thank you,

Unsure why, but had apparently set my world to hidden - I have made it public again so it should be possible to download: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1252279344

Though the world is pretty old by now :/ I really hope it'll help solve this.

photo

Thank you for for world, however I played there for few hours and it didn't occur. Are you sure it is still happening in the world? If anyone else have a world where it still happens, feel free to upload it as well. :)

Thanks!

I am not no, I havent played that world since 2017.

It's been a while since I played overall though, so unsure on the state on anything, but just wanted to provide what I could.

Ok, good to know.

Thank you once again.

Issue still alive. Just started happening to me yesterday in the base i am building. I can walk fine, but any form of running or jumping and you are done. You then must use your jetpack and land very still and near perfectly lined up with the ground.

photo
1

im having this issue on subgrids, specifically if im standing on an armor platform elevator moved by a piston, the sliding stops once the platform is clear of any surrounding blocks but if it has blocks around it i will begin to slide in a random direction.

photo
2

The only time I've seen anything like this in recent months is when a subgrid is involved. But even then, I can still move around normally.

photo
1

In my case it happens when I'm standing on a subgrid that has some degree of movement over the main grid:

I've made an overhead crane, it has rotors with wheels that allow it to move along a static grid rail, and it is attached to the main grid using conveyor tubes and hinges. It might be that sharing inertia tensor would mitigate the problem, but last time I tried the whole thing exploded (when switching forces change drastically, I guess that's the reason for explosions).

photo

I experience this too from time to time. I'll be running in my station (natural gravity or artificial) and my character will "hop" play the floating animation and skip across the grid. My character will slow down and "grab" the grid again. Hasn't happened for a while (haven't really played since April). Seems really random, in my experience continuous play time is not really a factor.

Bug can be seen in ‘no suit survival’ at 25:49 https://youtu.be/zOBRjQKkFcI I had this damn bug last night on my public server and it slide my character into my welders (inside large grid ship in gravity locked to voxels) My server and ‘no suit survival’ both have the drag mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571920453). Anyone have this issue in vanilla?

photo

I see this on piston-driven elevators when they are either moving, or jammed against something.

Hello, Engineers!

As this issue is rather old now and also last comment from you are some time ago, let me please ask if any of you are still experiencing this issue?

If yes, can you please share me more information? Especially decent steps to reproduce, video and (unmodded) save file with the affected grid would be best!

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

Haven't had this issue in the past 2 years.

I've not had this happen recently. I think it was before the planets stopped eating wheels, so a long time ago.

Hello, Timmy and Gage,

thanks for comming back with the update.

Happy to hear that you are no longer experiencing this issue.

As there is no further action needed from our side, I will close this thread now.

If it start to happen again, or you will stumble across anything else in the game, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Happy Engineering!

Ok October 3rd, 2022. I can confirm this is still happening on a single player world. I have a static grid drill rig, with a movable grid attached with pistons and an advanced rotor. the movable grid is a drill head that is extending down into the ground. Everything was fine up until about an hour ago, when I noticed I was sliding around as the drill head grid was rotating under me. There are 6 pistons at this time extending down the shaft, and I assume this has something to do with the problem. If as others have said it is caused by the sub-grid "bouncing" then as the number of pistons grows, this problem will crop up. I do not know when the problem first occurred, but I do know when the number of pistons was around 3 or 4 it was fine. I have shared inertial tensor on all the pistons and the rotor, and I have tried to gyro stabilize the drill head. None of this seems to have made any difference.

If you want a copy of this world, I can upload it for you to look at. I do have some mods on it, but they can be removed, as the drill rig and the drill head are 100% vanilla blocks.

EDIT: Disregard this post. I just double checked, and Inertial tensor was not shared on the advanced rotor any longer. After I re-enabled this, everything is fine again. I forgot I had to replace the rotor and did not check the box again.
