Can't join any servers

FordGT90Concept shared this bug 4 years ago
Solved

Tried a friends server and three Keen (#1, #3, and #6 I think) servers. What happens is always the same: "Waiting for server to respond" then about 40 seconds later "Server not responding." I attached a log of attempting to connect to Keen NA #1.

Facts:

#1: I have no mods enabled.

#2: The servers I try to join have no mods enabled.

#3: My router has UPNP enabled.

#4: No problems with any games other than Space Engineers.

#5: Cleared AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers and it didn't change it.

#6: I confirmed Windows Defender Firewall Inbound rules were present and I replaced them with a more permissive rule ("any" profile and "any" protocol). I've also added an equally permissive rule to Outbound.

#7: I have no mods enabled.

#8: Judging by my computer's and the routers network activity performance counters, it appears there is little to no network activity when it says "Waiting for server to respond."

#9: I have no problem running Space Engineers other than the other ticket I just submitted (results in sporadic dropping to the main menu).

#10: I ran a dedicated server on my machine and connected to it via LAN without problems but no one could join it.

#11: No one can join my "Friends" games.

#12: I verified files in Steam.

#13: I have the first three DLCs but not the three new DLCs.

The problem was caused by router MTU being set to 1400 to my ISP gateway. Changing the MTU to 1500 fixed the problem.

Hello, Engineer!

Thank you for your detailed report and log. After discussion with our programmers, we would recommend you to contact your internet provider to verify that you have access to that particular IP and port. Please let us know if it helped you.

Kind Regards

I do. Ironically, my friend was hosting a Risk of Rain 2 server on the same IP and port. I can connect to the Risk of Rain 2 server and I cannot connect to the Space Engineers server.

My ISP does not block any IPs and their hardware only intercepts port 8080 which, to the best of my knowledge, Space Engineers does not use.

That said, I cannot loopback my IP (e.g. <WAN IP>:80 gives a 404 for me (but works for everyone on the internet) but <LAN IP>:80 works for me. Any attempts to access my public IP from my network gives 404. If Space Engineers is doing this (which would be really weird), it could explain why it's not working for me. For example, if it is asking a server for my public IP, then tries to *test* accessing my public IP, the *test* will always fail even though anyone on the outside trying to connect to my public IP will succeed.

So my public IP is effectively blocked from my LAN. If Space Engineers attempts to access it, that could explain why it's having problems.
