cant join friends lobby

i got se1 today to play with my friend but for some reason we cant join each others worlds. at first he would not even show up on the friends tab in the server browser until i changed my steam download region to his (us - seattle / my original is frankfurt - germany). after changing this he would pop up on my friends list but it would still say waiting for server response -> server not responding. on his end he could join my game but it would put him in a space void where he could look around but not do anything (no respawn, 3rd person etc), or it would give him the same connection error as me. we tried both with and without mods enabled. thanks for your help!
