voice chat garbled and only in 1 ear

Good afternoon
I am introducing someone to the game, and voice chat was set on as default. Excited, we tried it.
It is not great. Poor audio connection, and the 1 ear bug. For me it was right ear, for them it was left. We were about 200m apart, with a base antenna up, so it should have relayed through it properly.
