Algae Farms cancel need for any other food

Under Consideration

I understand the need for Algae Farms to provide food source in deep space and for early game survival but its current design cancels need for any other food.

They are also completely maintenance free and do not require any consumables to be supplied.

What player need to build is just typical solar array (few solar panels, hinge, advanced rotor, camera, custom turret controller aiming it to sun) and add as many Algae Farms to the array as his solar panels can handle. Even battery is not needed because both solars and farms operate in day only. This can be built very quick in very early game with basic tools and access to stone.

For full automation player can add survival kit to the farm and queue there thousands of meals so he has ready meals awaiting non-stop.

And that's it, player has now food for eternity and farm is 100% self-sufficient - it creates electricity from solar panels to power farms which create food out of nowhere - no need to play with seeds, farming, water or risks that plants will die.

As long as farm produces more than astronaut consumes it will quickly build up a stockpile of meals.

Possible solutions:

1. Implement diminishing returns on eating same food over and over.

2. Add health drop while eating Algae Meals - would not affect early game when player can heal immediately because is literally standing next to survival kit which produced the meal but be very inconvenient to use algaes as universal food source everywhere.

3. Add consumable resource required to run Algae Farm - be it water or ice consumed during production.

4. Integrate with solar radiation mechanics and let algae farm die after long exposure to sunlight and then require some repairs, replacement of organics material etc.

Or reset "survival" Buffs whenever you eat Algea

Make their volume ridiculously huge, so you can't carry many of them at once

Hi, I just happened to stumble on this, I have over 5k algae crisps (don't ask how I got them), and ever since the Apex Update (which I love, thanks keen!) I have been eating nothing but algae crisps, and I will say, I have gone more tired of having to eat 10 packs to fill me up every 40 minutes. Whats more is that I can't rapidly eat these packs, I have gotten so tired of eating these that i have gone back to earth just to have one day of not spending 5 minutes to not starve for another 40 or so.

The point? The drawback of algae farms isn't clear to some players, the entire process is not efficient, sure, you can make the algae farms consume oxygen or something, but the fact I have to spend a HUGE amount of time and waiting to eat the next pack to prevent starvation, is a pretty big drawback on its own, so adding more curses to algae may not be as beneficial as you think...Another thing is the fact that players spawn near players, in the servers I play i know there is about 5-7 people in each server, who are more than 1 light second away from earth, (which if you didn't know is the only place food naturally occurs in keen EOS servers, other than NPC encounters and trade stations) adding these affects would not (and they already got big problems in their world) help.

This is a tricky one to deal with cause i agree that these suckers are a little too good in some ways

BUT BUT

At the same time these need to retain their effective function else the start is going to not be functional in a number of locations. space and moon starts would be non-viable alongside mars, and Pertam would become exceedingly challenging.

In their current state they are already a hassle to rely on long term do to how often you need to eat with them. so nerfing that side even more doesn't make much sense.

of the various ideas for a nerf that does hurt early game

option 2 and 3 are the best possible options; option 1 hurts early game too much as some places it would likely take too long to set up a working farm making life hell and, option 4 is just downright irritating to even think about.

I personally like option 3 the most, as requiring an input resource is most balanced as long as its not a hard to acquire one

for instance, they could require small inputs of the basic resources or stone. while insanely easy to acquire this would make them far less appetizing for long term sole source food production. as the amount of upkeep is increased dramatically.

I hesitate at the idea of it costing ice however, as some places have that in very short supply and its already needed for all the other crops. It can be a pretty significant issue on places like Pertam and some moons where you don't always have a nice spot to attain limitless ice for farming from. (though if there was some vanilla way to acquire very small amounts of ice passively without needing to mine ice, then this is also a good option).

No problem eating algae only on my end. Just put 30-50 into your inventory and you good for a few hours. Put the crisps into toolbar so eating is a one button press. So i agree with op, its too easy. My suggestion, increase their volume so one can't carry so many.

Further downside of real food, I don't want to waste any and always feel the need to compare how much a given food restores to how much iam missing. If your hunger bar could exeed 100% would be nice. Maybe up to 130 but as long as you are above 100, your belly is full and u loose the ability to sprint just like it is on low food

Algae is basic and takes CONSTANT, ANNOYING use to keep your food bar full. It is tedious, and since I am currently playing in Scrapyard where I can't make a food processor, I have to use algae. If they make algae any worse it will have a negative effect on the game.

Scrapyard requires mods, am I right? From my understanding, this support forum deals with vanilla SE. And some of us feel the need of a little extra motivation to produce and use proper food.
