Save As saves to saves folder rather than the folder of original save

Investigating

Doing a [Save As] action on a save in a subfolder creates the copy in the main saves folder rather than the subfolder the original save was in.

Expected behaviour is to create the copy in the same location as the original save.

Hello gruzzob,

Thank you for reaching our forum with this problem.

We tested this behavior on our side, and for us the [Save As] action is working as expected. This applies both to game-created folders (such as Frostbite world) as well as to custom or user-created subfolders in the save file location.

To help us investigate further, could you please clarify a few details?

  • Are you trying this on a world that contains mods, or does it also happen in a vanilla (no mods) world?
  • Which folder are you using for save storage? Is the game still using the original default folder, or have the save files/folders been moved in any way?
The default folder for a game save files can be located after typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar. You will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves. There should be a folder with your SteamID and your saves.

It would be very helpful if you could also:

  • Write down the full steps to reproduce the issue.
  • Provide a short video showing the process of using [Save As] and the resulting file placement.
  • Share the log file from the affected session where the save ends up in the main folder instead of the subfolder.

With this information, we’ll be able to look deeper into what’s going on.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Keen Software House

Hiya Ondrej.

My test world was Red Ship v2, no ingame settings changed. I just hit [start] from the new game screen.

The game is using only using -skipintro launch parameter, and the storage/saves directory has not been redirected at all.

My process was as follows:

  1. Create a new Red Ship v2 world.
  2. Damage a block
  3. Save
  4. Open the saves folder in explorer (%appdata%\SpaceEngineers\mysteamid\)
  5. Create a folder called "test folder"
  6. Move the Red Ship v2 save in to the above created folder
  7. Back inside SE, open the test folder inside the load game screen
  8. Select the Red Ship v2 save
  9. Save as, adding "copy" to the end of the name to differentiate.

At this point the save has been copied, and the expected behaviour is that the copy would be in the same location as the original (or in the currently open folder, which is the same place). However the save was generated in the root of the saves folder with all the uncategorized saves.

Subfolder (where the original save is):

787eb16a81fe679d1da9dcd384f33aed

Root saves folder (where the copy ended up):

40d412916096e8e4b95177a35f50ca66

above images and game log attached.

I also tested using a folder without a space in it, just in case and it had the same behaviour
