On PC and left and right triggers just dont work for connected xbox controller

I am playing the game on PC (Space Engineers 1) with a plugged in xbox controller and every single control and button except the triggers works. I have spent the last 3 hours trying to get it to work, the mouse button works and I can see what the hand drill working should look like but it doesnt work on controller. I have updated the controller, followed another similar post on here and set it as my preferred controller and reset to defaults and that did nothing, I have enabled and disabled steam controls and that also didn't help. The only fix so far has been manually in steam controls setting the controller to mouse and keyboard controls and binding left trigger and right trigger to right and left mouse buttons. That works to let me use them but then I lose all the support for controller in the game and don't have enough bind options on controller without advanced combinations to my knowledge. If there is some mapping scheme for all xbox controls to direct pc buttons please let me know or hopefully there is some form of better fix out there for this. Worst case is it worth refunding and trying space engineers 2 to see if it is compatible with my controller instead?
