Very Bizarre, Inconsistent Crash

Need More Information

Recently, I've started experiencing a very bizarre crash scenario during loading. When I load a multiplayer server, it usually crashes, but not always. If it successfully loads, it runs fine; it only crashes during loading. There are mods on this server, but they have not been changed recently, and when I send the save file to friends, they can load it just fine. Another server with the same set of mods and settings also works fine for me. This one specific save sometimes crashes, seemingly only on my computer. I've attached a log from one of the crashes in hopes that this issue can be resolved!

Hello James,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the forum.

After reviewing the attached log, it seems the game is crashing with a System.AccessViolationException error, which usually points to memory access issues. This can sometimes be linked to hardware-related problems, such as faulty RAM, overclocking instability, or outdated drivers.

In some cases, updating BIOS and Intel ME has helped other players resolve similar issues, but we would recommend first verifying the game files through Steam, checking your RAM's stability, and ensuring your graphics drivers are up to date.

To verify your game files in Steam;

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Also, delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

and, Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg

Launch the game and check if the issue still occurs. If it does, try to update your BIOS and Intel ME. Once done, please let us know if the issue persists? If it does, please share the latest log file with us.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for your quick response! I verified the game files in Steam, deleted the config file, and updated Intel ME. My BIOS should already be up-to-date because I had to replace my graphics card a month or so ago, and the BIOS was updated by the tech who installed the card. There was no folder named "ShaderCache", only an empty folder named "ShaderCache2", which I deleted. The game is still crashing when I attempt to load the save. I've attached the latest log.

Hello James,

Thank you for providing additional details, and we apologize that the previously suggested workaround did not resolve the issue for you.

From the latest log files, the crash error remains the same as in the previous logs, and it consistently occurs in the same modded world. This suggests there is a possibility that the MODs in that world might be causing the issue. With the recent game update, it's possible that some MODs that were previously compatible are no longer functioning correctly, leading to these crashes.

To confirm this, please try launching a new, unmodded (vanilla) world in either single-player or multiplayer mode and check if the issue persists. If the game runs smoothly in the vanilla world, it indicates that the crash is likely related to the MODs. Please note that we do not provide support for MODs, as maintaining compatibility with the latest game updates is the responsibility of the MOD creators.

However, if the issue still occurs in the new unmodded world, please share the latest crash log files with us.

Kind Regards,

To reiterate the initial problem, this crash only occurs on one specific save file. Not only can I create a vanilla world with no problem, but I can also create a new game with the exact same set of mods as the broken file with no problem. I would assume that the file was corrupted somehow, but I can send it to friends, and it runs fine for them. These facts indicate to me that mods are not the issue. I know this crash is extremely bizarre, but I feel it's worth investigating for that very reason.
