Issue with horrific lagspikes

Need More Information

The game tends to run well half of the time and other half it has horrific lag. It feels like it goes down to 10fps but there is no way to detect that since steam overlay or msi afterburner still shows 60fps. Happens both on my rtx4060 and gtx1660ti. Graphical settings do not change much on that issue.Happens with empty worlds too and without any mods

Hello Sapphira,

Thank you for reaching out to us and we sincerely apologize for the issue you've been experiencing.

Please ensure that both your graphics drivers and operating system are up-to-date. After updating, try the following steps, which may help resolve the issue;

Verify your game files in Steam

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg

Then, launch the game and from the game's main menu, go to Options > Display > in the Video Adapter dropdown, select your dedicated graphics card. Also, uncheck the Vertical Sync box if its enabled/checked. Ensure that the Video Mode resolution shows *** (recommended aspect ratio). If not, select the recommended resolution from the list and click OK to save.

Next, start a new world or join a server (preferably an unmodded/vanilla, world/server) to check if the issue still occurs. If it does, try these additional steps:

  1. Go to Options > Graphics.
  2. In the Quality Preset dropdown, select Low or Medium and click OK to save.

If the game continues to lag, press Shift+F11 (to display world stats on-screen), and record (also send us) a video/screen recording showing the lag in the unmodded single-player world/server. Please also include the latest log files from the time the issue occurred.

  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind Regards,

I thank you for the assistance. Graphics settings lower or using another computer did not help for me, neither did deleting the cfg file or reinstalling the game. Also the overlay showed 60fps as if the lag was not even there. The entire thing is a mystery to me. Edit: Maybe i can try to record the lag or something like that

I also remember the game having worked better in the past. Maybe an issue with a recent update?

Ok, i noticed that while the game is lagging wind turbines still spin like normal. The animation of my tools is not lagging either. That means my movement, be it turning or moving, is lagging and not the game itself.
