Many weapon blocks can penetrate blocks placed directly in front of them
While designing a fighter I noticed many weapon blocks can shoot through armor blocks placed directly in front of them on the same grid, allowing you to fully conceal them inside the body of a ship. From some brief experimentation I've found:
Artillery shoots through 1 armor panel
Large grid rocket launchers shoot through 2 Large grid armor blocks
Large grid railguns shoot through 1 armor panel
Regular gatling guns don't shoot through anything
Warfare DLC gatling guns shoot through 1 small grid armor block
Autocannons shoot through 4 small grid armor blocks
Small grid railguns shoot through 3 small grid armor blocks
Both regular and warfare DLC rocket launchers shoot through 12 small grid armor blocks
reloadable rocket launchers shoot through 4 small grid armor blocks
assault cannons shoot through 17 small grid armor blocks and 1 armor panel.
I've attached a video of the issue, I realized a bit too late I should've disabled all mods to test but the only mods enabled were a ship speed limit mod and build info/build vision alongside text HUD API.
There's a similar effect where you can use a connector behind an armor panel or window. Some of us see this as a feature rather than a bug. I do wonder if this is by design, not so much for concealment, but because explosive rounds need a little time to clear your grid before "arming". Otherwise it's easy for things like rockets and even shells to catch on edges of adjacent grids when performing hard maneuvers. Just a theory.

Hello Engineer,
Thank you for your message and for sharing your observations about weapon blocks firing through armor blocks. We’re aware of this behavior, and it’s related to how projectiles spawn in the game. Due to a slight delay when projectiles are generated, a ship moving at maximum speed can sometimes be in the same location as the projectile as it spawns, resulting in it hitting the ship’s own grid. This has been particularly challenging with missiles, which can even detonate upon launch if the ship is moving fast enough.
We appreciate your report and the time you took to reach out. While we can’t confirm any specific plans to address this at the moment, please know that we’re always looking for ways to improve and evolve the game. Thanks again for helping us make the game better for everyone!
Best regards,
