Can't update the game, "Content Configuration Unavailable" or "Connection Timed Out"

Need More Information

As the title says, I can't update the game through steam. It returns errors such as "Content Configuration Unavailable", "Connection Timed Out", or another error which I cannot recall the wording of.

I have verified the files, and even if something was missing, it won't actually download and replace that file.

I have completely uninstalled the game twice, including deleting everything in my appdata folder, and the result is the same.

Hello,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem. We are sorry that you are experiencing it.

Can you please provide me more information?

Does this problem still occurs to you or it was just a one-time thing?

Are you experiencing this problem also with some other games using Steam, or it is happening only to SE?

When exactly this problem started to happen to you? It was working just fine before that?

Since you wrote that you also completely uninstall and re-install the game, I take it it should be installed in the latest version. If you manage to install the game anew, what exactly is happening when you try and press the "Play" button on Steam? Does the game won't load at all? Will it start to load (to what stage?) and then crashes?

Can you please try our general workarounds? These are:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files; you said that it is not working, but please do this step anyway just to see if the problem is still there as of now.
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Please let me know if anything from this list help you.

If not, please specify what exactly is wrong and what is happening on your side when you try to load the game.

It would be also helpful if you can share me the log file from any of the affected game sessions.

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

I can play the game, it just won't update at all through Steam. The only way I can update it is to completely reinstall the game, after that it still won't update. This has been going on for months. I have deleted the entire roaming folder twice, deleted the shader cache, restarted steam, etc. All of my drivers are up to date.

All Steam says is "Content Configuration Unavailable" when I try to update. Sometimes it says that the connection times out. I don't have this problem with any other game on Steam.

Hello Nick,

thank you for your reply.

It really seems that this is not actually the game problem, but it might be arising from your Steam.

Can you please try these steps:

in Steam go to Settings – Downloads and select the option "Clear Download Cache".

After that this problem should not be present anymore.

Please let me know if this helped you.

Kind regards,

The problem still exists whether the download cache is cleared or not. It simply won't update, again stating "Content Configuration Unavailable".

I have the same problem with Space Ennginers only. unable to resolve this with the Steam team, who are not interested; they pointed out that this is a Keen Software problem. I need help to fix this. I can reproduce this on two separate PCs. connected to different internet providers and different Windows versions 10 and 11. I have tried so far:

Renistaling steam, windows, games, etc.

Switching off the firewall in Windows and the router

clearing all possible cache files from Windows, games, Steam, etc.

Reinsealing essential Windows components and drivers

Nothing works; I need help.

I recently had the same issue... To fix this... Right Click SE in Steam game list, go to Properties, then proceed to "Workshop" Tab, and unsubscribe all mods that are listed "Trash Can Icon"... once all are deleted, the message will immediately disappear with updates intact.

Hello Engineers,

sorry to hear that you are still experiencing this problem.

Can you please all of you try the fix/workaround that William Pendleton shared?

Please let me know if this solution worked for you as well.

Kind Regards
