Game freezes after a few seconds in main menu

Need More Information

I am a brand new player running the game today for the first time. The game freezes after a few seconds at the main menu screen. The freeze coincides with the nvidia in game overlay animation starting to appear. However, the freeze happens even when nvidia in game overlay is disabled and still happens at around the same time.

I have tried all of the following but the situation has not improved

* Adding -skipintro launch argument in stream

* Deleting SpaceEngineers.cfg

* Renaming SpaceEngineers folder

* Disable discord overlay and exit discord

* Disable steam overlay

* Disable nvidia in-game overlay

* Edit SpaceEngineers.cfg to switch to windowed mode and lower the resolution

* Clean reinstall of nvidia drivers

Hello, Robin,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem that you are experiencing.

Can you please provide me more information?

What happen when the game freeze? Is it just frozen and you have to force close it? Or does it crash? Or does it get "unstuck" after some time?

Is the issue reoccurring to you? Is it every time you run the game, some times you run it, once... ?

Are you able to get to the game at all (start some single player world, join multiplayer server...)?

I can see that you did try some workarounds yourself. Can you please make sure you try all of our general workarounds?

These are:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Let me know once you do all of these steps and still be experiencing same problem.

However, as the game log doesn't contain any reasonable error, can you please also send me a log from Windows Event Viewer?

You can find "how to" here:

https://www.spaceengineersgame.com/troubleshooting/game-will-not-start-issues/

Look for "Problem: When the game does not start and does not produce any log file." category.

Please send me both logs if the problem persists.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards

Please see this recording of how the game behaves. This happens every time I launch it. As you can see, there is a brief period of time where I can interact with the game. If I attempt to launch into the quick start session during this time, it will freeze right then. Otherwise, if I wait, it will eventually freeze after a short period of time, every time. It never unfreezes afterwards.

I have tried:

  • Verified integrity of files in Steam
  • Remove SpaceEngineers.cfg
  • Remove ShaderCache2 directory
  • Remove \Roaming\SpaceEngineers
  • Clean reinstall of nvidia drivers (Version 5523.44 release date May 9 2024)
  • Completed installation of Windows Updates (there was a .NET thing and a Windows OS thing waiting to be installed)

There are no event viewer logs from .NET Runtime for SpaceEngineers.exe, so there is nothing to send there. I included the latest space engineers log files, even though there is nothing interesting in there, same as last time.

I used WinDbg to attach to the process while it was hung and gathered stack traces from all the threads for you, please see stacks.txt.
