Control lag/random control disconnect

Eric Adkins shared this bug 17 days ago
Solved

I wasn't sure how to title this one, as the issue is somewhat confusing, allow me to explain.

While playing a few nights ago, my keyboard and mouse disconnected from my PC. Shortly afterward, they reconnected, and I thought nothing of it, really. Then a bit later it happened again. So I re-seated my mouse and keyboard USB connectors, and thought "this is a PC problem, maybe my mouse and keyboard are just getting old". Then it happened at least once an hour while playing this game, and this game alone. I have tried plying 3 other games (Escape from Tarkov, Heart's of Iron 4 and Factorio) and I do not get this same issue after hours of those games. I came back to Space Engineers, and sure enough it happened again. It started going down in frequency, so I though it had gone away.

Now I have an issue where any extended button press stops registering for a second every one or two seconds. It goes away for a bit, but then while holding W, my engineer will stop every second or so. While holding F on a survival kit to refill vitals, it stops every second or so, and I get the associated sound cue for connecting to the SK. This happens on all movement keys and F (haven't seen it happen with the mouse buttons yet). It isn't the game lagging, my looking around goes smooth, and it is happening on my solo game, and multiplayer.

I do have mods, but I have tried a fresh save without any mods loaded, and it still occurs.

Any assistance would be appreciated, as although the disconnect issue was not causing any good deal of discomfort, the input skipping is causing the game to be unplayable.

Hello, Eric,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem. We are sorry that you are experiencing it.

Can you please first try our general workarounds that are helping most of the players to solve most of the issues. These are:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (t means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Please let me know if anything from this list solve your issue or there will be any chance in the behavior on your end.

If you would do all the steps above and still would be experiencing this problem, can you please share me a screen recording of this problem happening on your side (if it can be visible/observable in the game)?

Also share me a log file from any of the affected game session, please.

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Thank you for the tips, I will do all this and let you know how it goes. I don't know why I didn't think of that, it really should be the first thing one does when experiencing an issue of this nature. I do not know how I would get a screen recording, I don't have any video screen cap software, and I'm unaware of any built in stuff that Windows might have, though I would be happy to provide it if it does happen after I do the basic stuff.

For now, though, as I said, I'll let you know how it goes.

All right, here's how it went.

  • Verified integrity of files, reset PC, started game, same behavior
  • Verified Integrity again, deleted .cfg, installed graphics driver insured windows was up to date, reset PC, loaded game, same behavior
  • Wasn't able to find a ShaderCache folder, but I found ShaderCache2 and deleted it, started game, same behavior
  • Backed up folder, reset Steam, reinstalled VC Redist 2017, reinstalled game, reset PC, as soon as I went to accept the mod.IO privacy agreement, I got the control disconnect as if I had pulled out the USB on my mouse and keyboard. After they reconnected I started new world, spawned in the drop pod and jumped out to the planet, and got the same behavior

If you can let me know how to record a screen cap video, I will get that to you, but for now I have included the requested log from the fresh install and new world.

Good News! I was able to figure out how to use X-Box game bar to record video, and I now have a video for you to see what I mean. In this video, you can see that there are no mods installed, and this is the fresh install of the game. I change no settings and go into a fresh world. I am holding W/A/S/D or F in every case, and you can see that the input seems to stutter. Most often when pressing W and on the ground, but it also happens in the air and with any prolonged button press. You can also hopefully see that the game itself is not lagging, it is just the input. Hopefully this helps to clear up any confusion. When I tried to upload the video, the upload failed so I have included a link to where the video is hosted.

I have also attached the log file from that particular game. I hope to hear back soon, as I really enjoy the game, and in this state, I can not.

Even better news! I had uninstalled the game a couple days ago, but today I decided to check it today and reinstalled it, and it's now working. I don't know what changed, but as of now, I no longer have the issue. Have a great day!
