Launch in steam to "Running" but game never starts and never exits

Malohkan shared this bug 2 months ago
Need More Information

I have over 2000 hrs in the game, but I haven't played in a while. I've changed my mobo, cpu, and gpu (4070 TI) since the last time I played. I installed the game and tried to launch. It shows in steam as "Running" and I see the "STOP" button, however the game never launches. The attached log file shows it barely gets anywhere before giving up. It shows in Task Manager always with 0% CPU and less than 20 MB of memory. Clicking STOP in Steam won't end it the process. I've tried End Task as well as taskkill but it won't die. The only thing that ends the process is rebooting my machine.

I've tried:

1. Installing on a different drive (where I also have steam games)

2. Uninstalling and reinstalling graphics drivers

3. Deleting AppData/Roaming/SpaceEngineers, uninstalling, and installing fresh again

4. Running in Win 7 & Win 8 Compatibility Modes

5. Unchecking "Automatic" on virtual memory and manually setting it to the "recommended" levels, which I got the idea from here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/0/3647273545695782919/

I'm out of ideas and I don't know how to get the game to run. For added context I can run lots of other modern games perfectly well. This is the only game I'm having trouble with.

Hello, Malohkan!

Thank you for writing to us and we sincerely apologize for the issue you have been experiencing.

Upon reviewing the log, it appears that the game couldn't locate the Config (SpaceEngineers.cfg) file. This issue can be addressed through two ways ;

a) You may ask a friend who plays Space Engineers to share their Config file with you. They can find it by typing '%appdata%' into the Windows search bar, which will redirect them to the hidden Roaming folder. From there, they can navigate to '\Roaming\SpaceEngineers' to locate the Config file. Once obtained, you can paste this shared Config file into your '\Roaming\SpaceEngineers' folder. Afterward, launch the game via Steam to see if the issue persists.

b) If you're unable to obtain the Config file from a friend or if the issue persists, we recommend performing a clean installation of Space Engineers. Though it seems, you have tried that already, try it again by following the below steps;

But, before proceeding, kindly back up all your saves and blueprint files by copying the 'AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves' and 'AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Blueprints' folders to a different drive or folder.

Once completed, uninstall the game and ensure the deletion of any leftover files from the 'AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers' and 'Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEngineers' folders.

Then, reinstall the game and launch it via Steam.

If the issue doesn't reoccur, you can paste the 'Blueprint' and 'Save' folders back into 'AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers'.

However, if the issue persists, please provide us with the new log file from the time when the issue occurred.

Kind regards,

Hey thanks for the reply. When I wrote "Deleting AppData/Roaming/SpaceEngineers, uninstalling, and installing fresh again" this meant I've already followed these steps, as the process of uninstalling removes the "steamapps\common\SpaceEngineers" folder. In fact, I've actually done 3 reinstalls. Once without deleting the AppData/... folder, and twice with deleting it. The log file I provided for you was after launching the game for the first time after my 3rd fresh install.

Just for certainty, I've done the following just now:

1. Uninstalled the game again, double-checking that "steamapps\common\SpaceEngineers" has been removed

2. Deleted the "AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers" folder

3. Emptied Recycle Bin and Rebooted

4. Installed Space Engineers, noting that the Validating step was stuck at 0% for a surprisingly long time, then eventually started making steady progress and completed

5. Launched the game from Steam

6. After 2 min, confirmed that the SpaceEngineers.exe process is still there, at 0% CPU and 0.6 MB memory. The AppData... folder has been created, the log file is identical to the one I already attached.

7. I waited a few more minutes, then rebooted (since it's the only way I can kill this) again

8. I restored my original SpaceEngineers.cfg and launched SE again

Attached is the log file from launching after adding my cfg file. You can see it's basically the same experience, ending in the same place, except "MyConfig.Load()" has actual settings to load.

Please let me know if you have any other ideas. After reinstalling 4 times and rebooting a dozen, you know I'll try anything!

Another interesting tidbit. When I start the game, with PowerToys installed, I see "We've detected an application running with administrator privileges". I have also tried uninstalling PowerToys just in case they're conflicting, but I do think it's interesting and worth noting that I see this message when launching the game even though I never get a request to authorize admin privileges.

Also I have tried disabling Windows Defender, as well as installing the Xbox Gamepass version of the game, but neither have solved my problem.

Hello, Malohkan!

We appreciate you sharing further information with us.

We apologize that none of the workarounds have resolved your issue. However, the new log you sent us shows that the Config file missing error is no longer present, which means that the issue may be fixed. Unfortunately, there is no other error or exception in the log that could indicate what could be causing the launching issue with the game.

So, we would like to confirm if you have tried reinstalling the game after uninstalling PowerToys. If you haven't, we recommend doing a clean installation of Space Engineers as suggested in our previous response. As you may already be aware PowerToys can conflict with Windows and game performance. So please try a clean installation of the game and check if the issue persists even after that.

If the issue still occurs, please send us the new log file and the log from the Windows Event viewer from the time the issue occurred.

To get the Windows Event Viewer log, please open the Event Viewer (from the start menu, type Event Viewer). In the Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs, Application, and send the top “.NET Runtime” error from Application: SpaceEngineers.exe. (please see attached image).

To do this right, please follow these steps:

1) Select the correct file on the left side (Application)

2) Select first the .NET runtime error from the top (using default ordering)

3) Copy the large bottom text and send it to us.

Please Note: make sure that the info is from the Application: SpaceEngineers.exe

Kind regards,

I think there's a misunderstanding about the config thing. I stated "I restored my original SpaceEngineers.cfg and launched SE again. Attached is the log file from launching after adding my cfg file". No issue was fixed, I was simply trying to give you a different perspective on how this behaves. The first log was from a blank slate install, the 2nd was after restoring my (very) old config file from a time when things were working.

I have rebooted since uninstalling PowerToys, I uninstalled the Xbox Gamepass version of the game, then did another reinstall from Steam. Launching from Steam still fails in the same way as before.

In Windows Event Viewer, there are no new Logs in the Application category referencing ".Net Runtime".

Just to be sure, I rebooted again, and launched the game at exactly 1:00pm and waited 3 minutes, then refreshed the events. Here is every event created in all categories during that time:

Hey just bumping this again. Any other ideas for me to try?

I just finished reinstalling Windows 10, choosing the "keep applications installed" option checked. I still have the same problem. Could there be some hardware combination that I have that is the problem?
