CTD on server exit

Won't Fix

Hello,

I am hoping you can help me with my issue, please. I have had to stop playing the game out of concern for my system integrity because of it. Basically, every time I exit a server (vanilla or modded, doesn't matter) my game either crashes to desktop or crashes the entire PC. Mostly it's a CTD, but the odd blue screen of death has me quite concerned.

I have no other issues with the game. I have tried a full reinstall with deletion of old SE files, as per the Steam Community Support thread. Not sure what else to try.

System specs:

MSI Cyborg 15 A13V Laptop

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13620H 2.40 GHz

16.0 GB RAM

2TB SSD

Windows 10

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050

Single Monitor 1920x1080

Thank you for your time,

Allison

I've done some digging with help from the SE Discord community, and I'm beginning to suspect my blue screens were separate issues from the CTD. The latter happens every single time I exit a server, whereas the blue screen only occurred twice.

Hello, Allison,

thank you for reaching our forum with this problem. We are sorry that you are experiencing it.

Can you please provide me more information?

Is playing Space Engineers the only action that after that you experience this problem? Or do you experience it also in other games, or when working on the PC in general?

Does it happen in every game world that you played on – single player/multiplayer, modded/without mods, loading previously saved game/playing a completely new one? Or is it isolated to something specific?

Can you please try these general workarounds? Those help to solve/fix most of the issues for most of the players. The list:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Please confirm that you tried all the steps mentioned here. If the issue still would be present for you, can you please share me a log file from the game?

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Hi Ondrej,

Thank you for your quick reply! I will try to address as many of your questions and recommendations as possible:

Yes, the problem appears to be isolated to playing SE. That said, the blue screens have been only a few isolated incidents, while the crash to desktop was every single time I played until a recent change I made. That change was disabling the background program Windows Game Bar, which I now have reason to believe was the real culprit behind the blue screen events. Since disabling Game Bar, the crash to desktop events are no longer 100% guaranteed, but still happening about 85% of the time or so. I have not had any blue screen events since disabling Game Bar.

I had not thought to try a brand new game world to test the problem, but will do so now. I have been playing on 3 different worlds and found the problem persistent on all of them. One world is a vanilla multiplayer server hosted by a friend. The other two are my own worlds, both with a couple small mods; one an online survival world and the other an offline creative world.

As for your solutions, I had previously tried almost all of them as per recommendations on a Steam Community post. I also confirmed last night that my graphics card driver and overall system are up-to-date. The one solution I have not tried yet is the reinstall of the Visual Studio files. I did a web search for the term "Reinstall VC Redist 2017" and found quite a number of different files to download, including several that required an account. Could you please send a link to the particular file(s) you are referring to?

I have also included my most recent log file, despite not having tried all of your ideas yet. Not sure if it's helpful or not at this point, but I wanted to be thorough.

Thank you very much for your time,

Allison

Ondrej,

I have been trying to start a fresh world to test if the bug occurs when exiting that world, too. However, I have had to give up on that idea. Each time I try to start a new world, I get a CTD as I'm choosing the Advanced Settings for the world. Of course, I have no way to tell if this is related to my other game crashes or if this is a separate issue, but hopefully the information is of use in your diagnosis.

Update: I've now had 2 more blue screens. Oddly, they had different error codes, so I'm starting to worry my hardware is suffering. Both occurred while I was trying to load the game, which regularly soft locks the computer for a minute while starting. One time the BSOD code was an Unexpected Store Exception, and the second time it was a Clock Watchdog Timeout.

Also, the soft lock I mentioned sometimes doesn't resolve no matter how long I wait. At that point, my only option is a hard reboot

Hello? It's been 2 weeks since I heard from anyone - is there a question or suggestion I missed that you are waiting on me to address?

Thanks!

Hello, Allison,

thank you for all your replies and answers.

However, this is bringing even more confusion to this problem.

Please make sure that we need to separate this problem with the game from any possible other problems with your system.

Can you please answer me these questions?

Are you experiencing BSOD in general on you PC (when not using it, when using it for non-performance heavy tasks)?

Is the BSOD happening to you, when you are using your PC heavily (other games)?

Is any of the other game crashing to desktop as well for you?

Or does this problem (CTD) happen only in SE?

Did you try to load completely new game without any mods as suggested before? Is is still happening there as well?

You should want to run any of the Scenarios/Custom games as they are. No need to go to Advance options or anything like that. We need to know if you are able to launch, play on, save and load any of the vanilla (no mods) basic worlds in general.

At what point does the game (affected saves) crashes, please? Are there any special steps that you are following, and the game crashes for you all the time like this? Can you tell me, if any?

Additionally, thank you for the log that you have provided. But I would also need the other one, named SpaceEngineers_(date)_(time). Please make sure that you send me any of the game sessions where you did experience the crash.

If you are struggling with "Reinstall VC Redist 2017" point, please feel free to use this link to navigate to the proper place where you can obtain these installation files; here.

Thank you.

Kind Regards
