I attached a save file to show this behavior. As this has been reported multiple times over the last years, it is a bit puzzling why there is no progress on this. Not being able to rely on events that are in vanilla is not very nice. For a crawler it is better to be able to detect a merge and unmerge. Now I rely on the piston events and timers, which is not as clean.

An additional inconsistency you can find in my save file is that toggling the top merge block on and off does unmerge and then remerge properly again. However, toggling the bottom merge block off and back on will not merge again. To make them merge, you have to toggle the top one again. Also not very reliable.
