Windows Crashes Since Decorative 3 Update

Matthew shared this bug 7 months ago
Won't Fix

I'm playing on a Keen official server with no mods. Vanilla.

Everything has been great up until Decorative 3 came out. I bought and installed it on release day. I have the new med bay and cryo on my ship, as well as the inset button panel (if that matters to you).

Without warning, the game crashes and windows BSODs telling me an unidentifiable error has occurred. It reboots and dumps in my BIOS where I have to repair my windows boot loader to regain access to my computer. The computer is then stable. I can do whatever I want with Windows include play other games, and it's fine. But once I load Space Engineers and rejoin the official server, I can play for a few minutes or a few hours (since I don't know when it's going to crash), but it eventually does, meaning I have to repair my drive before I can boot again. It is a Seagate Barracuda 512GB SSD that only hosts Windows and OS functions. The game runs on a 4TB HDD.

I've checked the logs in Windows Event Viewer and it doesn't know what is going on, only that my computer has restarted without cleanly powering down. I've checked all my drives for errors and Windows cannot find any. I've checked that my mobo and processor aren't perhaps overheating, and they are well within normal temperature (~40C). I've checked power conditioning and can detect no spikes or uneven power in the PSU. I took my RAM out and cleaned the contacts in case that was the issue, then ran diagnostic tools to stress test them, and they passed.

The problem only presents itself when I'm playing Space Engineers, and only since the latest update, and I have no idea why. Please let me know if there is a log file I can attach that helps you diagnose this.

Hello, Matthew!

Thank you for writing to us, and we apologize that you are experiencing this issue.

Kindly try the following workarounds that might help resolve this issue:

Verify your game files in Steam

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

If the issue persists after trying these workarounds, please provide us with both the game log and the Windows Event Viewer log when the crash occurs.

  • You can access your game log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

To get the Windows Event Viewer log, please open the Event Viewer (from the start menu, type Event Viewer). In the Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs, Application, and send the top “.NET Runtime” error from Application: SpaceEngineers.exe. (please see attached image).

To do this right, please follow these steps:

1) Select the correct file on the left side (Application)

2) Select first the .NET runtime error from the top (using default ordering)

3) Copy the large bottom text and send it to us.

Please Note: Make sure that the info is from the Application: SpaceEngineers.exe

Kind regards,
