Game goes black spontaneously while on servers

William Cook shared this bug 15 months ago
Won't Fix

When ever I join a server( public or friends) ever since I got the game years ago my game veiw will go black. I can still hear, move around, access terminals, even see the hot bar and gps signals, but my view of the game will just go black. My screen is always black when first joining the server and then happens randomly. I can't find any relatable posts anywhere even having posted on reddit, receiving no response. Pictured below is what it looks like:

Hello, William!

Thank you for writing to us, and we apologize that you're experiencing this issue.

Could you kindly share further information concerning the issue?

Did you encounter this issue while playing on specific modded server(s), or did it also occur on unmodded/vanilla servers?

Kindly try the following workarounds that may resolve this issue;

Verify your game files again on Steam

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Same access as SpaceEngineers.cfg

  • Update graphic drivers
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Once you've completed these steps, please launch the game via Steam and try joining one of Keen's Official Servers. If the issue doesn't occur on these servers, attempt to join the specific server(s) where you usually experience the issue. If the issue persists on particular modded server(s) only, it's possible that the issue is related to the MODs on those servers. Please note that we cannot provide support for MODs, as there are thousands of them, and it's the responsibility of the MOD creator to keep them updated.

However, if the issue occurs while playing on Keen's Official Server, please provide us with the log from when the issue occurred.

  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind Regards,

I joined the keen official server#6 and after a couple of minutes the event took place. I believe this file is the one you need:

Hello William,

Thanks for sharing the logs.

We didn't find any errors or exceptions in the log where you joined Keen's server and still experienced the black screen issue.

Did you have already tried the workarounds we mentioned in our previous response? If not, try those workarounds to check if that resolves the black screen issue.

After trying the workarounds or if you have already done that before (and still experiencing the issue), try the below steps as well;

  • Open your PC's Device Manager > Display Adapters > Nvidia GPU > right-click > update driver > click on "Search automatically for drivers" to check for driver updates and update if available.
  • After the drivers are updated to the latest version, remove/unplug other monitors/displays and play the game with the main/single screen/display.
  • When in the game, change your graphics quality to Low or Medium. To do this, go to the Main Menu > Options > Graphics > Quality Preset > Low (or Medium) > click OK.
  • Try to join the Keen server and check if the issue persists.

If so, please send us the latest logs.

Kind regards,
