Game won't start, only runs in the background

Won't Fix

Good day,

I've recently got back into space engineers and had the same problem I had a while ago where the game will simply not start, I load up steam, press play and nothing happens visually. The game can be found running in the background using 14.4/14/7mb of memory. I was able to fix this last time by removing all mods, which I have done this time to no success.

After reinstalling the game yesterday, (clean install, all previous files had been deleted), I noticed that it wasn't finding the CFG file in the logs so I had my friend send me his working one and the game started after sitting idly for about 5 min or so with nothing going on. Today I started the game and it loaded fine after waiting about 3 min before the starting flash screen appeared and the game launched as usual, however after a power trip where the game shutdown without saving as my PC lost all power, the game now refuses to start.

I have tried:

Reinstalling the game.

Verifying game files

Running steam as administrator

Removing all DLC's

Waiting more then 10 min for the game to lauch.

Clearing all files in %appdata%Roaming\SpaceEngineers

Tried putting that -skip cutscene command into the launch option in the hope that might do something

I have attatched the latest log from when the game refused to start. I was unable to find logs for when the game actually started despite taking a while to start.

A screen shot of the amount of memory, processor power and ram usage while its in thie 'limbo'mode is below:

I hope you are able to assist me.

Many thanks

Oliver B

Hello, Oliver Butow,

I am sorry you are experiencing this issue. Since you have already tied to trouble shoot your problem here are some additional solutions to try to resolve this issue:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause issues with game launches.
  2. Check Event Viewer for Errors: Open the Event Viewer on your PC and check for any errors or warnings related to Space Engineers. This might provide additional clues about what's causing the game not to start. If you find anything, please share it with me.
  3. Rename the appdata/Roaming/SpaceEngineers file: rename the file to something else (for example from SpaceEngineers to SpaceEngineers- backup) and see if you can then generate new cfg. file and shadecache when you launch the game (there will be newly generated SpaceEngineers file). The newly generated file will have default settings. If your problem will not be resolved by this you can change the name back afterwards and delete the newly generated file.
  4. Disable all of your plugins if you are using any

If the issue persists after trying these steps, please provide us with the latest log files from when the game refused to start. Could you please also send me your dxdiag? Just follow this guide: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-and-run-dxdiag-exe-dad7792c-2ad5-f6cd-5a37-bf92228dfd85 and send me the file you will find.

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I was able to get the game to start by removing all non-essential files and waiting about 30 min. After about 30 min a windows permission window appeared requesting access which I allowed. This allowed the game to start. Since then its been taking me about 5min for the game to start but it has been starting consistintly.

Would you still like me to send my dxdiag?

Kind regards,

Oliver Butow

Hello, Oliver Butow,

thank you for the log and DxDiag. I would like to ask you if you are using monitor. There were some errors related to the display mode and full screen settings on your computer. Please make sure that your monitor supports a 1920x1080 resolution at 60Hz. Check your monitor's specifications to confirm its supported resolutions and refresh rates.

You can also try to launch the game in windowed mode or to lower resolution or to change graphic settings.

I have also noticed you are using a few plugins. Can you please deactivate those for testing purposes and try to launch the game again?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

Yes, my monitor is a 1920x1080 60Hz computer monitor, albeit a bit old. I will try lower graphics to the minimum, start in windowed mode as well as remove all plugins and reply with any results/improvements.

Here is a screenshot of the monitor resolution and refresh rate from the invidea control pannel.

Hello,

After removing all plugins (I assume this meant DLC content as well as any subscribed mods/blueprints from the steam workshop), and setting the graphics to minimum in windowed mode, the game still took 4min and 12 seconds to launch into the starter splash screen.

I have attatched the latest log from when I started the game without any mods, DLC etc.

Please let me know if there you would like the DxDiag file again, or if you would like any other information and I will do what I can to address it.

Once again thank you for assisting me with my problem and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello, Oliver Butow,

thank you for the new log. Can you please let me know what disk you have? If you have SSD you could transfer the game there through Steam and try to launch it.

Thank you in advance.

Hello, Oliver Butow,

purchasing new SSD card could help you. But I cannot determine how fast could the loading get.

You can also try to reinstall Steam as the game is launching through it and it could be causing the issue.

If you want to you can also reinstall your OS.

We measure loading times after each update and there is no issue with the current version. Can you launch the previous version of the game or is it also taking around 4 minutes?

Hello,

I reinstalled steam which didn't seem to solve the problem, unfortunately I am not able to reinstall my OS as I don't have time with work and clients to reinstall all applications and stuff that I use. The game starts quickly up until the heavy industry update, and then after that there is a consistant load time of about 4 min.

I am hoping to update to windows 11 in the next couple months, so perhaps that might solve the problem?

Many thanks,

Oliver.

Hello, Oliver,

thank you for the additional information. After discussing this with our programmers, we came to a conclusion that the long loading times are probably caused by your hardware or software. There is nothing in the log indicating an error in the game itself.

Updating to Windows 11 could potentially help especially when combined with new SSD card. You can also get your computer professionally checked up. Unfortunately, without seeing your computer, there is not much I can do to solve your issue.

I understand that reinstalling OS can be time consuming especially if you use your computer for work. I hope that upgrading to Windows 11 will help you.

One more thing that you can do is to contact Windows support and maybe they will be able to tell you more. As there was no error in the game log, there could be some processes running in the background which we cannot see.

I am once again sorry for not helping you more with the long loading times.
