Cannot Launch Space Engineers

Won't Fix

I just bought Space Engineers and I'm getting errors trying to launch it for the first time. It is saying it requires DX11, but I know that error is not correct. I'm running a Lenovo Legion Y7000P-1060 with a GTX-1060 graphics card and Windows 11. I just updated my drivers today. I attached a couple of the log files.

Hello, Myron,

thank you for letting us know about this issue.

First of all, can you please try to download this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

It contains fixes which could help you out with your problem.

If that won't help you, you can also try to do the other general workaround/fixes as in the list below:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) – you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder – same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

If nothing from above would work for you, can you please share me the other log from the game file as well? I mean that one called "SpaceEngineers_(some numbers)_(some other numbers)". Please if you are still experiencing this issue, sent me the most recent one.

Kind regards,

The Microsoft link didn't do anything, it said everything was already installed.

I verified game files.

I have no SpaceEngineers.cfg file, nor do I have ShaderCache because the game has never successfully started.

I apologize that I missed the SpaceEngineers_xxx.log file last time, I thought I had selected those files as I could see an error there. This time I made sure to choose the two files with today's date on them.

I have seen similar issues with other games in the past because there is an API used by many games to determine what resolutions are available that was removed in DX12. It has caused a few games that used to run to crash on startup. Many times I can work around it by editing the config to use borderless windowed mode and 1024x768 resolution. However, I don't have a config file to edit in this case.

Hello, Myron,

thank you for the logs.

I can see that there is error with you graphical card (HRESULT: [0x887A0022]).

This error seems like your card is not booting correctly. The provided link should fix this problem. So maybe, if you are willing to uninstall it completely and then re-install it pristine fresh, it might help you.

Also please note that the game is not officially supporting Win11, so it is possible that the game might not work there as expected as it hasn't been tested there etc.

The error associate with your problem reads this: "The resource or request is not currently available, but it might become available later." as you can also find e.g. here:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3ddxgi/dxgi-error

Please make sure that the GPU is accessible and set as primary GPU when starting the game.

Because the game is not able to use the primary card, it is trying to use "Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630" which might really be origin of the issue on your side. You need to make sure the game is using the "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060" card instead.

Also – do you have any chance to get the config file from other player (friend or so)? If yes, please try to paste the .cfg file into the Roaming/SE where it should be and see if that changes anything for you.

Kind Regards
