"mod.io" "error accessing service"

George Pandzik shared this bug 18 months ago
Won't Fix

Every time I try to interact with my blueprints, worlds, and mods, it takes minutes to load anything from the Steam workshop, and things only appear after I see red text reading "mod.io: error accessing service". This is a terrible user experience.

I have no interest nor intention of using mod.io, but I can't figure out how to disable these checks for a service I don't want to use. I've tried to search for solutions, but I haven't been able to find anything useful beyond posts on Reddit from two years ago saying that the code was removed, which is obviously no longer the case.

What are my options? Please help! Thanks!

Hello, George!

Thank you for writing to us, and we apologize that you're experiencing this issue.

Could you try to Verify your game files on Steam ;

  • Right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

Kindly check if that resolves the issue. If the issue persists, please send us a screen recording/video showing issue at your end, and log files when experiencing this issue.

  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

We are looking forward to assisting you with this issue.

Kind Regards,

Hi! I'm verifying the local files now, though I don't think they'd be the culprit -- I've seen this error for more than a year, and I've seen it reported elsewhere for more than two years -- but it can't hurt. I'll see what I can do about catching it in the act; I may have to fire up and actually configure OBS, for real, this time...

Also, I'm running on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, so my home-directory structure is gonna be vastly different (I saw this problem under Windows, as well, so I do not think the OS flavor is in play).

(Side note: I quirk an eyebrow every time I go to the main menu and see "Exit to Windows", since, uh, I haven't fired up my Windows partition in over a year; "Exit to OS" might be a more inclusive button label).

I'll let you know what I find. Thanks!

---

Edit: Files verified properly, according to Steam.

Okay, I have a 4:27 .mkv video file from OBS demonstrating the problem (a 100-second lag between when I open the, in this case, Scripts browser for a Programmable Block and when the mod.io error pops up, followed immediately by all of my local and Steam scripts appearing). It's 52.9 MB.

Do you have a preferred format and place to upload? Let me know how you want to receive this file, please. Thanks!

---

Edit:

I've converted it to MP4, if that's a better format for uploading to y'all; that version is 26.1MB. I'm going to try attaching it to this ticket -- let me know if there's a better method you'd prefer.

Interesting time-stamps:

0:00 - SE main screen showing patch level and file-name that I'm loading

2:29 - Click Browse Scripts button in Prog. Block

4:09 - mod.io error appears in bottom-left, 100 seconds after clicking Browse Scripts (sounds like a timeout value if I've ever heard one)

Hey, any word on this? It's been three weeks. Is there a setting or something I can use to skip the login issue I documented above? Do you need any additional information, like video, logs, etc.? Thanks!

Hello, George,

unfortunately Linux is not officially supported by us. If you are having this problem on Windows, Xbox or Playstation, then please provide me with a video.

If this is happening only on Linux then you have to reach out to non official Linux Discord community: https://discord.com/channels/125011928711036928/630756768435142668
