Cant start the game

David Purves shared this bug 14 months ago
Solved

Fresh install won't launch and log only shows that it can't find a config file but doesn't create one. The game also just sits in task manager with static RAM usage and won't close so each attempt at fixes (DX11 reinstall, VCRedist reinstall etc.,) requires a full system restart.

Event Viewer shows;

Hello, David,

thank you for contacting us on our forum.

From logs that you shared I can see that there is kernelbase crash happening on your side.

The kernelbase.dll crash occurs in a wide range of games and apps in general. The crash isn't typically caused by Space Engineers and may be the result of a system issue.

However, you can try and take the following steps:

Update Windows

Update your graphic drivers

Reinstall the Visual Studio redistributable: Download the latest version from the official Microsoft website (x86: vc_redist.x86.exe OR x64: vc_redist.x64.exe)

Run as a different user (a corrupt Windows user profile is a common source of this error)

Some players have fixed this issue using this workarounds:

Add -skipintro into the game launch options

Rename / Delete "\Steam\SteamApps\common\SpaceEngineers\Content\Videos" folder

Delete this directory: \AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Promo (You can access your files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.)

Let me know if something from above works for you.

Kind Regards

Retried all the above fixes and deleted the promo folder. In the end I found that I couldn't use alternative PC user accounts either. This led me to do a windowsOS repair and all is well! Thank you for the ideas and fixes, all the best!
