Random Lag Spikes -- Even on Main Menu

Zenathano Xo shared this bug 21 months ago
Solved

Both in-game and on the main menu, every few seconds, my game freezes for about half a second. I think that these are sim speed freezes; the thruster animations still play while the game is "frozen"

The shift-f11 diagnostic tool shows that when one of these freezes hits, the Server Simulation CPU Load, Server Thread CPU Load, Simulation CPU Load, and the Thread CPU Load all spike to almost or over 100%. I have a fairly recent Ryzen 5 1500X, so I can't imagine that it's a hardware limitation.

I've tried both clearing the shader cache and putting the game on my SSD, which seem to be the major fixes I've seen online.

My drivers are up to date, and I disabled my antivirus for testing.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I reinstalled the game and the issue fixed itself. Let me know if I can provide information to stop this in the future.

Nevermind. The freezes returned after about 20 minutes of playtime. Still no solution

Hello, engineer!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

Could you kindly share a bit more information concerning this issue?

Are you experiencing this issue when playing on Lobby/DS/our multiplayer servers or in Single Payer mode as well?

Is there a plugin installed in your game, or are you playing in a modded (active MODs) world? If there is any active plugin, kindly remove/uninstall the plugin or if there are any active MODs, kindly try if you experience the issue in the vanilla (no active MOD) world.

Could you also try lowering the display video mode and graphics quality preset? To do so, from the game Main Menu, click on Options, and select Display, in the Display Settings, firstly make sure that the correct graphic adapter has been selected in the Video Adapter setting (it should be like, Nvidia or something similar), then click on Video Mode drop-down and select lower screen resolution. Save the changes.

To lower the graphics quality preset, from the game Main Menu, click on Options, select Graphics, in Graphics Options, click on Quality Preset drop-down and change it to Low/Medium. Save the changes. Kindly check if you still experience the issue.

If the issue persists, kindly send us your log files when experiencing this issue.

  • You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar, and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

We are looking forward to assisting you with this issue.

Kind Regards,

Happens in both Multiplayer and Singleplayer, as well as on the main menu.

I think it improved slightly when I removed my mods and reduced the graphics to low; however, it's still occurring, so I think it's a different underlying issue.

Here's the last few logs:

Hello, engineer!

Sorry to hear that none of the workarounds has solved the issue for you.

Could you check that your OS and graphics driver is updated? Please also check that there are no high CPU or graphic drivers usage applications running in the background (some applications can impact your overall gameplay experience).

If you still experience the issue, could you send us a screen recording/video showing the lag behavior (kindly turn ON the detailed info/diagnostics tool: Shift + F11) on the Main Menu and in-game (on the vanilla world, with no active MODs), along with the latest log files?

Kind Regards,

This should be what you're looking for. This is on a vanilla singleplayer world. In that world, the freezes aren't terrible, but multiplayer with mods is unplayable because of them. In the video, you can tell that the thruster flares and atmo turbines don't stop when the game freezes, and that the game still freezes on the main menu.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Sorry, apparently the video was too big. I compressed it and attached it to this reply.

After doing some experimenting, I think it may be an issue with Steam. The second I use Task Manager to kill Steam, the stutters stop. However, about a minute after I kill Steam, the game closes entirely, no crash report, no errors in the log so far as I can tell. Is this intended behavior (i.e. if the game has to be linked to Steam)?

Hello, engineer!

Thank you for providing the logs and screen recording.

Yes, it's expected that the game shuts down when exiting/closing the Steam client.

Could you check if you experience lag when playing in offline mode? To do so, click on the Steam option (top-left) in Steam Client and click Go Offline. Start the game and check if you still experience lag (on Main Menu & new Single Player world).

Also, as a workaround, you can try reinstalling the game on C: drive.

Before reinstalling the game, kindly back up your world saves and blueprints in a different folder.

From the steam client, uninstall the game and delete every leftover in the /Roaming/SE and /Steam/SE folders. Utilizing the steam client (in online mode), reinstall the game on C: drive. Kindly check if you still experience lags in the game (Main Menu & vanilla world).

Please provide us with the latest logs if the issue persists.

It turns out that the issue is on Steam's end. Some of my other games were also experiencing stuttering, so I reinstalled Steam and that fixed the problem. For others that may experience this issue, the "telltale signs" besides the stuttering are that Steam uses more CPU than you'd expect (for me, about 10-13%) and has very high power usage in Task Manager. Thanks for your help with this problem; I might submit a bug report to Steam about it.
