thanks for letting us know about this issue.
I would need more information.
What server is it? Is your friend running a dedicated server through the Steam? Is is game in Lobby mode? Any other server?
The friend you are mentioning is the admin of the server? Is he able to connect without issues?
You are able to play other games without issues? Join some other server (try some official Keen one), the single player game... ?
I would love to take a look on the logs from the game. Can you please provide some, where you tried to join the server, please?
You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
It might also help to see the server logs, if you are able to get those from the friend. The server logs (if dedicated server) are located also in Roaming folder, just follow SpaceEngineersDedicated.
