Preferences reset and default beside game version

Hi,

Every once in a while this happens to me:

I start the game and I get a "Welcome Engineer" popup, a GDPR consent popup, and the "Continue Game" button is gone as well as all settings set to default.

I also notice a red "default" string besides the game version.

It seems I can still load my saves, but they complain that Experimental mode is not enabled.... etc.


It is becoming frustrating that I have to reset all these settings over and over and I would like to know how to avoid this and what does the red "default" string besides the game version mean.

thanks for letting us know.

However, this issue seems really odd. It never happened me personally or to anyone that I know.

But since you are writing that this is happening to you, it seems that you are missing SpaceEngineers.cfg file or SharedCache2 folder. Or these files are somehow resetting to you when you are not playing the game.

Please try these workarounds in order to fix it on your side:

  • Verify your game files in Steam – right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file – if you have it present in the appdata folder. Deleting this folder means that your game configuration will be deleted (so basically what is happening to you). Maybe it can get better if you would have this file delete and reset properly and it can be created and saved again anew. You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache2 folder – same access as above
  • Back up (so you won't lose e.g. your saves) your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall the game – please make sure you reinstall the game completely and fresh. By this I mean that after you perform the uninstall from Steam, go check both folders with the game data – one is in appdata, as mentioned above and the other is located in Steam/steamapps/common/SpaceEngineers. There should be no leftovers or folders/files that doesn't get deleted. If so, please delete them manually. Perform the PC restart and install the game again.
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

As for the "default" text next to your game version number, that only means that you are not part (and not currently playing) in any beta program.

Hope something mentioned above would work for you and fix your issue.
