Mods Duplicating / Not Appearing

Demonslayer shared this bug 2 years ago
Solved

Starting in the last 48 hours or so Mods in the "MODS" page of editing a save (or starting a new one) will fail to appear and some will double up. Spent roughly 12 hours trouble shooting including uninstalling completely. Saw a few others mention this bug on Steams Discussions and the recent post from Kienata saying Keen is looking into it and filling a bug report. So here it is.

NOTE: Everything is fine on saves that existed before 48 hours ago. All mods are there, but adjusting the list brings up the bug with mods not appearing/doubling up.

The "Properties>Workshop" Window of Steam shows all mods installed properly and only 1 copy

During Troubleshooting on a fresh install with zero workshop items installed i managed to get the bug to occur again with a mod refusing to appear on the "Available Mods" side of the workshop(mods) window [NOTE: This is a list of mods that ran seemlessly 3 days ago and the mod that disappears off the list this time hasn't had an issue any other time this bug occurs for me]

Troubleshooting Steps I Took:

1) Fresh Install with Cloud Save OFF and 0 workshop Items

2) Went through a collection list i have of mods used together for 1 one of my save i was playing earlier this week

3) Add each mod 1 at a time via the Steam Overlay Workshop Tab from my Collection

4) After Each mod is added i press refresh to make sure it appears

5) Ever 10 new mods I start the game, verify all new blocks are present, save, exit Space Engineers

6) Relaunch space engineers

7) Start new save to make sure all mods are still present (in the past the available mods are different from save to save)

8)Repeat steps 3-8 until an issue occurs

For me the first mod to not show up was the 25 x Tank Capacity Mod in my collection BUT (and this is where it gets weird) it was there when i added it and disappeared on a page refresh when i added Scientific Machines 4 mods later. This is around 55 mods deep into troubleshooting

Also, the mods are not appearing in alphabetical order. They seem to be in a random order.

photo

Additional Information:

For emphasis on certain points.

The Collection is 79 Mods and Scripts. 76 SHOULD appear in the mod list. After continuing to add mods 1 at a time the total mod count appearing is 67 with duplicated mods [Screenshots from ingame and workshop to show differences attached]. For me THIS time it happened at roughly the 50-55 mod loaded point, however I have seen it happen sooner. Also side note, if using the "Subscribe all" button from a collection it seems more extreme.

Also, the mods that disappear/double will change as mods are subscribed to or unsubscribed from on refresh

The mods that don't show or are doubled are different normally from 1 new game to the next. Or even 1 restart to the next. Previous saves seem fine however attempting to add mods to them will cause the bug for "Available" mods, Active Mods seems to remain the same.

Interesting note. after hitting refresh when the bug happens the "Available Mods" tab seems to randomize its order.

This time around it looks like [QoL] Production Quota got doubled up even though i only have it subscribed once

Hello, Engineers!

Thank you for the report and information.

I have been looking into this, this afternoon. I have not had an instance where the mods double up or are failing to appear so far. I have noticed that the mods are not correctly in alphabetical order as mentioned by Sevya Edmiston. Would it be possible to post some screenshots of them doubling up? Also, could you clarify Sevya Edmiston if you are being affected by the same collection or, is it happening with other mods too?

I see you mention that previous saves are fine, are these previous saves with this particular collection? When do you mention the 'subscribe all' do you feel it is that you have subscribed to them all in one go that is an issue here?

Any further information would be a great help.

I also not there is a new response which I will also look through as there are a number of screenshots :)

Kind Regards

The previous saves do use the same collection. i created the collection from my subscribed list before i attempted a complete re-install of Space Engineers thinking i had somehow broken my game. As saves are fine UNTIL you go to add more mods.

Its a difficult bug to reproduce if i'm being honest. I've seen reports of it from only a handful of people and witnessed it in a live stream. There is a certain level of randomness to it it seems...

"When do you mention the 'subscribe all' do you feel it is that you have subscribed to them all in one go that is an issue here?"

No. While trouble shooting i installed these mods 1 by 1 with a page refresh between each install. i first noticed THIS instance of it occurring at around 50 mods HOWEVER i've had it happen before at around 25 mods.

Logs also are showing no issues.

I'll be refreshing this regularly so if you need any more information i should be able to get it to you relatively quickly

Edit: I said "Logs are showing no issues" i should have said Event Viewer. there has been no crash so i dont have a crash log

Edit 2: When Production Quota doubled up they WEREN'T next to each other. i moved them together so its more visible

Thank you for looking into this, Laura. Mine are not in any collection, just my list of subscribed mods. Please note in the last screenshot, ID ending in 5715_1, that the mod NoPhysics Block is highlighted 4th from the top, then reappears 3rd from the bottom.

Edit 1: A detail I had forgotten. Night before last (approximately 40 hours ago), I was unable to load a a world due to mods being unable to load. My mod list was blank, and all mods in the world were listed as their ID numbers in red. I checked another world and had the same result. At the time, I just shut the game down and went to bed. This has been a problem since that time.

photo
1

Sevya reminded me of something that had slipped my mind. While refreshing the mod page i would occasionally see mods that were already activated change to their ModID number and be red. that was before i realized it was a bug and was checking other things so i just attributed it to MY game being broken and was just loading slow so i didnt check to see if those mods were removed from the list later or if they loaded correctly next refresh

photo
1

I've been watching Space Engineers with Process Monitor and as best I can tell it never even tries to write the mods that fail to load to disk. I have a world with two mods enabled.

One mod works(mod id: 2645964353) It's a skybox, I see it written to disk and loads in the game.

The other mod(mod id:856019339) isn't event attempted written to disk.

Attached is a MIcrosoft Process Manager log of Space Engineers accessing D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\ folder during world load.

Notice it checks to see if the mods are on disk, writes the working mod but doesn't even attempt to

write the non working mod to disk.

Is the mod corrupt on Steam Workshop servers? Is it failing some kind of checksum after downloading? Don't know how to check that.

Little video of what we are talking about.

Edit: Also blueprints are not alphabetical and duplicated (One bp duped 6x)

Yes, that!

I was thinking over the course of the day. There hasn't been an update to Space Engineers since May 3rd, a couple of weeks ago. This bug just showed up a few days ago. Steam updates every time it starts up, or at least says they do. Could this be a problem on Steam's side? Or, an interaction between Steam and Space Engineers?

photo
1

Possible. Steam had a Workshop backend overhaul to 'improve performance' very recently, and I've noticed Collections are no longer shown in the 'Add to Collections' list in alphabetical order since, although not had any mod issues myself. Could be a change to the cache/retrieval system that is causing files to not download or be duplicated locally.

I've suggested to one poster to reset their Steam cache and clear their mod folder to let them re-download, but not had feedback on if that solved their issue yet.

To clear the Steam caches: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/6AD7-820D-8BE5-E51F

I have deleted, Verified and reinstalled mods and still having a problem, just haven't tried the cache part.

Clearing cache and re logging in did not work.

Hello, Engineers!

You have all provided incredible information! Thank you so much. The videos, screenshots, and text were so useful :) I have managed to reproduce both the issue of duplicates and also mods missing. I have reported this internally.

Thank you for the help.

Are we able to fix it ourselves or do we need a patch?

photo

I'm having same issue. At first I thought it may be a steam client issue but the steam client is successfully downloading mod id 2809355711 files. Space Engineers doesn't look to be loading the mod in to the game however.

photo

Either steam or SE needs an Update

photo
1

Steam updates several times a day

photo
1

Well we have to either wait for an update on the situation soon

photo

hopefully before computers become obsolete :D

photo
1

I am having the exact same issue as Demonslayer described, but with in game scripts as well as mods, some appear in duplicate, others do not appear at all.

photo
2

I have the same error, also only since a short time past. Created a world a few days ago whithout this issue, recogized it today for the first time. While this issue is under investigation, there is a, non-ideal workaround (PC steam version):

1. Create a world, adding just the mods appearing in the list for now (add at least one to find the correct mod syntax later)

2. Launch world, save and exit the game.

3. Navigate to the worlds save location (for me it is C:\Users\"Username"\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves\"SteamID"\"WorldName"

4. Open the Sandbox_config.sbc with a texteditor (notepad for example)

5. Scroll down until u get to the mods section, and add your mods manually.

See the screenshots for a quick peek or:

find

<EnableTeamScoreCounters>true</EnableTeamScoreCounters>

</Settings>

in sandbox_config.sbc

the next line should be

<Mods>

then u add your mods by the following syntax (using the weapon core mod as an example):

<ModItem FriendlyName="WeaponCore - 2.2(13)-Stable">

<Name>1918681825.sbm</Name>

<PublishedFileId>1918681825</PublishedFileId>

<PublishedServiceName>Steam</PublishedServiceName>

</ModItem>

the line after your last mod will be:

</Mods>

so if we want weaponcore, Bullet Trail and Clean Camera as example mods the entire section would look like this (the first two lines are just so u find the correct spot):

<EnableTeamScoreCounters>true</EnableTeamScoreCounters>

</Settings>

<Mods>

<ModItem FriendlyName="WeaponCore - 2.2(13)-Stable">

<Name>1918681825.sbm</Name>

<PublishedFileId>1918681825</PublishedFileId>

<PublishedServiceName>Steam</PublishedServiceName>

</ModItem>

<ModItem FriendlyName="Bullet Trail">

<Name>1547180265.sbm</Name>

<PublishedFileId>1547180265</PublishedFileId>

<PublishedServiceName>Steam</PublishedServiceName>

</ModItem>

<ModItem FriendlyName="Clean Camera">

<Name>544032930.sbm</Name>

<PublishedFileId>544032930</PublishedFileId>

<PublishedServiceName>Steam</PublishedServiceName>

</ModItem>

</Mods>

The Numbers in <Name> and <PublishedFileId> are both the mods id, which is also the name of the folder in which they are saved in. For me the mods are saved in H:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\244850

Apologies for the bad english, i hope this helps a bit until a patch is released. You can also save some time finding out which mod has which number by just copy pasting from other worlds which already use the desired mod(s).

Screens of sandbox_config.sbc mods section and the location of the steam workshop mods below (your harddrive might have a different name) Best regards!

Oh man I wish I saw this before I've done all the stuff I've done to try to fix this on my own. I've done all of the following with no luck.

Unsubscribed from all mods, then re-subscribed to all mods

Deleted the entire workshop folder and re-subscribed to each mod again

Entirely uninstalled space engineers and then re-installing space engineers

Entirely uninstalling steam, deleted the entire steam folder, then re-installed steam

Completely wiped my entire harddrive partition, and then re-installed windows

subscribed to workshop items one at a time, running space engineers and the world, before subscribing to the next one (This one was very tedious)

Man I wish I saw this first. This would have saved a bunch of frustration on my end. Glad Keens aware of the problem. Hope it gets fixed soon, there's a bunch of stuff I really want to play with.

photo
1

Oh good Lord you really tried EVERYTHING...

If you wish to try a few mods, i think i wrote the workaround a bit overcomplicated, doing it should not take too much time, especially not if compared to the amount of time you must have spent on trying to resolve the issue.

@Sevya Edmiston Thank you! :)

photo
1

I find it interesting that this is not yet fixed.

If it were a problem with SE, Keen would have likely already fixed it.

If it were a problem with Steam Workshop, you would expect it would be affecting a lot of other titles as well (and therefore higher on Steam's radar).

Not a complaint. Just a curious observation.

photo

I mean this bug has appeard about a week ago, maybe less (this topic is now 5 days old). Since someone said that SE hasn't had an update in a longer time than than it seems like it could be a steam thing.

The game could just check the mods folder for valid mods and show them in the mod list but i assume (with no background knowledge) that the subscription to mods (which also signals steam to download them) is linked to the game detecting said mods. So while all bets are off on my part, i would assume its a communication problem between the game and steam, caused by a recent steam update.

Whether or not other games are affected is unknown to me, however i could also imagine that different games might handle the detection or displaying of mods in the game client differently, thereby maybe showing them as intended (or not lol).

But im just throwing wild guesses. Also some bugs are difficult to track down even if they can be reproduced. Since its not gamebreaking (as it can be worked around for now even if its not a pleasant or user friendly way) im not too bothered by this bug.

Also as this isn't a security critical backdoor in a database or something alike i don't think that 5 days is a long time for finding a fix.

But maybe im just too used to OWIs bug fixing time frames in the game Squad, where some bugs persisted for months and years.

Has anyone verified the workaround works? I tried but didn't work for me...

added to sandbox_config.sbc

<ModItem FriendlyName="Consolidation Armament">

<PublishedFileId>2809355711</PublishedFileId>

<LastSaveTime>2022-05-22T20:05:42.2877633-05:00</LastSaveTime>

</MyObjectBuilder_WorldConfiguration>

...didn't work so added to sandbox.sbc mods section as well but still didn't work. The game is just not registering that the mod exists.

Happy Keen updated post to Reported – Awaiting fix status.

Hey Nate, yes i did - it worked for me, i wouldn't have posted it else. Did you add the line

<Mods>

before the first mod?

if you wish you can ul your sandbox_config somewhere and ill take a look.

Also i just see my screenshot has

</ModItem>

</ModItem>

at the end (which is one too much)

Edit: There is a line in your mods section which shouldnt be there afaik - try removing it and try again please.

<IsDependency>true</IsDependency>

photo

The work around that worked for me is to subscribe to ~10 mods. Make a new game with those mods, save the game. Then unsub from all mods and sub to 10 new mods you want to add. Add those mods and repeat until you have added all the mods you want to use. Then sub to all of the mods you intend to use and play.

@Mimic - FthatDotCom

@Mark - You were right, removed the dependency requirement and it worked. ThanksForTheAnswerDotCom :)

Edit: May have been a Steam issue as I started a new game and all mods are now showing alphabetically again with dupes removed.

This workshop issue seems to be fixed for me. All mods are back to being listed alphabetically. No duplicate entries for scripts, mods, or blueprints.

Hello, Engineers!

Could people confirm if the issue is still happening? I have noticed Nate has mentioned that it appears to be fixed for them. I have just checked from my side and it appears to be working as expected compared to when I reported it the other day. I'd quite like a few more people to check if possible :)

Just checked it out, works for me again aswell. Could you offer any idea you guys from Keen have about the (probable) cause?

Kind Regards back to you!

photo

Mods are once again in alphabetical order, as are scripts. Workshop worlds and blueprints are now loading and seem to be working correctly.

I would also like to know the issue, if one has been found. There are mods that stopped working when this came up that are still giving critical errors. As that was coincidental with the mod list issues, it might help modders fix those problems.

Thank you,

Sevya

photo
1

Unless I'm misunderstanding, I would bet an unsub/resub and/or deleting the mod from local storage to force a redownload would fix your issue.

Those modders may need to republish now that steam is working properly again.

photo
1

Thank you, Nate. That seems to be working.

photo
1

228+ mods subscribed here, I myself did delete the workshop folder for SE when troubleshooting this, redownloaded them all and did nothing to help. :(

Edit : I have not tried SP SE in the last week+, so if there's been any fixes for it I've missed it.

photo
1

Shouldn't delete the workshop folder, just some of subfolder contents inside(\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\244850\*). You will want to verify integrity of your steam files for SE to fix the workshop folder/filesystem and then recheck your mods again.

Sorry, should have clarified a bit more in my explanation, yes I did try that.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/1/3272440033215313214/

Did the file validation before I deleted anything, and after I re-downloaded all mods, made no difference.

photo

I have not found unsub/resub to have any significant effect, once all missing entries/duplicates were fixed manually in the sandbox and sandbox config files, I have been able to sub scribe, download and install through the mod manager without future incident. I have not been removing them via that interface however and been manually removing the lines in the files to be on the safe side of the issue. So far, this has alleviated the problems. The issue is not with the download in my testing but in the mod manager registering the mods.

Hello, Engineers!

This was an issue on Steam's side which is now fixed.

I will mark this as solved.

But it's not fixed, you marked a bug I reported as a duplicate of this one and I'm still having that issue.

Odd, my in-game mod list is acting correctly again. Thanks for responding, Laura K. :)

photo

@Robert Baldwin: Well this one is fixed, as it seem to me your problem is of a different kind. Might want to open the same thread anew (again duh) and specifically link this thread as being a different topic. Also please try the maximum possible specifity including the mods names, links to them in the steam workshop and the world settings, as well as the steps you have tried to fix it (like checked file integrity, unsub/resub, reinstallation of SE). If u send me the mod workshop links (unless its hubblegum skybox and contour highlight orange) and your world (either all settings or drop the save somewhere) ill try to reproduce.

Best Regards!

I am still having a version of this issue. There aren't any duplicates in the mod list and the list is alphabetical, but the majority of my subscribed mods simply don't show up in the list. See my screenshots for clarification. Mods show up as intended in the workshop under subscribed items in the Steam app workshop, but not when viewed through the game's menu or steam overlay. Mods I've subscribed to are shown as intended in the game properties, as well, but still do not show up in the workshop list in the game, so I can't enable half or more of my mods.

I've tried to find a workaround for this issue, though am not as technically skilled as some of you. Mostly I have tried different combinations of resubscribing and restarting steam, validating my files, and deleting my workshop content folder. No luck so far getting the mods to show up in the list. I am afraid Mark Weatherly's solution is a bit beyond my technical ability. I tried deleting the workshop content folder rather than go through each folder individually and try to figure out which mod is which before editing that config file. It gives me a headache just thinking about doing that.

For example, I've focused my screenshots on the Isy's mods I want to use but cannot enable in the game due to this issue.
