Lightning does not strike blocks above a decoy

Reported

Prior to 1.198, lightning struck blocks that were placed "above" a decoy relative to the planet's gravity.

It used to be a viable construction to place a decoy with a blast door over it to prevent damage to the decoy and keep it around longer as a form of "lightning rod".

This is no longer the case and causes the following problems:

  • The decoy can take many fewer hits compared to a blast door (a decoy can take 2, a blast door can take 20+). This means a welder to fix up the decoy (or extreme manual attention) is required, which is not possible in many instances (e.g. on Keen Official servers due to welder limits).
  • Lightning striking the decoy causes deformation of surrounding deformable blocks - even if they are not damaged in the components sense, they need to be repaired to restore their appearance.

If this is deemed "Not a bug", then there are 2 further bugs which stem from the "phasing" behavior:

  1. Lightning should not deform blocks around the struck decoy.
  2. Lightning should do reduced damage to Decoys (such that a Small Grid one can take a minimum of 2 lightning hits without being damaged enough to become nonfunctional). As it stands, "grid" and "character" hits can come back to back and if the player is unlucky, a decoy cannot be repaired in time to avoid taking damage - or in the case of a small grid one, cannot be repaired at all!

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Load the attached map in 1.200. You'll need to disable the welder to start the test since lightning immediately hits when the map loads.
  2. Cycle through the various decoys: turn all of them off, turn one on, wait for lightning to hit it, note results. There should be a button to toggle each decoy.
  3. Observe what block the lightning damages, either the blast door or the decoy block. For the "full coverage" brick, the one enabled when the map starts, note that the plating under the decoy will be deformed when the lightning strikes the decoy.

Steps to reproduce expected behavior:

  1. Load the attached map in 1.197 (Wasteland update). You'll need to disable the welder to start the test again.
  2. Cycle through the various decoys. You can delete the trailer - only the large grid static grid ones can be tested for this since 1.197 lightning ignored dynamic grids. Turn all of them off, turn one on, wait for lightning to hit it, note results. There should be a button to toggle each decoy.
  3. Observe what block the lightning damages, either the blast door or the decoy block. For the "full coverage" brick, the one enabled when the map starts, note that the plating under the decoy is not deformed when the lightning strikes because the damage is going to the blast doors above it.

Hello Engineer,

We've reproduced the issue you've described. It's been reported to our internal system.

We will update this thread when we know more.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
