[1.187.088] Wheels are randomly exploding at higher speeds (vanilla)

GrindyGears shared this bug 6 years ago
Solved

As the title implies wheels are randomly disappearing when traveling at higher speeds over relatively smooth terrain. As a scenario I'm driving in a 8x8 truck, in a desert region with no major hills, bumps, rocks or really anything that could get in the way.

I haven't found the exact speed of which it occurs, but i've experienced it when going going as slow as 60 m/s and as high as 90 m/s.

I don't have exact STR but from what i've noticed when it occurs its right after going off a very small bump, that is hardly enough to notice, when the suspension compresses down a bit the wheels just seem to poof at that point.

Things of note: vehicle stats are roughly as follows:

vehicle mass: 120 tonnes approx

wheel count: 8

Suspension strength: 16-20% (I suspect its something to do with this being too "soft" however over craggier terrain this is needed.)

It feels like it occurs any time that the suspension hits it's max height (bottoming out?)

If it's desired I can include a BP (since this will probably fall to inflex, it's going to be a friends only BP)

Cheers

Can you check if the wheels are getting damaged after a while of driving. If that happens, I have a grid with the same bug.

Note: This grid has more bugs like connectors disconnecting after loading.

Also as a feedback to feedback, if you mark a thread as a duplicate could you please link the existing thread so we can be sure it is if fact the same bug? Two titles about wheels exploding, aren't always the exact same cause or effect

Thank you very much

Hi,

can you please provide the blueprint and the video with reproduction steps?

Thanks!

Sorry for the slow reply, I missed the email notification. I've been experiencing it on pretty much any grid with wheels, and many friends as well, You could additionally contact SirHamsterAlot or Bruce leedeleedle lee (on discord) as we've all experienced this. I mentioned it to Inflex in discord that It may have something to do with wheels being "covered" by things like fendors or blocks. Happy bug hunting

Nm. not the bug.

Thank. I really appreciate your imitation of work. Now everything is the same as before, the wheels arbitrarily self-destruct.

I noticed there was a patch about fendors in this most recent update, so i figure somethings been done with wheels, so i decided to test it.

Unfortunately it seems this is still an issue and I'm still not sure an exact cause other than speed.

Copied from wheels broken bug report.

Roy C ● 2 days ago When I spawn in a vehicle that has the wheels locked. I can hold forwards (W) or backwards (S) and it will raise up on it's front or back wheels. It's a 4x4 (8) wheeled rover. The middle four are set to propulsion with brakes, the outer set to steering with two gyroscopes set to 100% and overide controls checked. Also there has been a problem of wheels popping at high speed with no indication of being damaged. While rover was in this configuration my tires didn't pop. When I toggled the propulsion of the outer 4 wheels they started popping very quickly. I had increased speed from 50m/s to 80m/s.

I can reproduce this. This time it was on a dedicated server with other players for a racing event.

here's the workshop blueprint. On a dedicated server, press X, then jump, while in the air spin the wheels fast, then they should pop when they touch the ground.

I looked at one of those videos frame by frame and noticed something. I think the wheels got destroyed because they were hitting the main grid. The blocks above the wheels cause them to explode when they hit them at high speeds.

I still agree that this is a bug and should be fixed.

@Alboridian No my rover doesn't have any blocks near the wheels like that. coincidence.

Could not recreate with my own rover on a new easy start earth world. I threw it around like crazy and could not get the wheels to pop. This is the same rover I used on Xoc's Dakkar race that did have the wheels pop. Will check my to many wheels theory shortly.

Again, I could not recreate. Tried Invalid's Rover. Threw out many vehicles with wheels galore. Still can't reproduce. I should mention that these tests were performed on an offline single player game.

I have never been able to reproduce this bug on my own system. even on a dedicated server. At most I get the voxels failing to load when I push my system with max graphics settings. I usually run with low settings at around 120 fps. One PC is an AMD 1.5ghz quadcore with onboard gpu and 4gigs of Ram. This lower performing pc does get the wheel pop bug on MARS even with vanilla SE and runs at about 30-45fps. Takes me about 10km of driving straight ahead non stop to reproduce.

I was using 1x1 large grid wheels as a decoration on a build that I'm doing right now. The wheels are used on a solar power tower array between the primary rotor block and each of the two secondary rotors (there are two solar arrays per tower). I ground down the wheels a bit just until the tread was gone (again, they're being used as a decorative element), so technically they're damaged. They randomly explode on a regular basis. It's kind of exciting. Needless to say, I've abandoned wheels as a decorative element on anything I'm building.

Hi, unfortunately I'm having this bug. At speeds like 50-70 m/s, I hear a block damage sound and I see at least one wheel got exploded. There are destroyed block particles.

I tried disabling wheel mods (except Bike wheels mod which I don't use for now) but it didn't fix.

Old issue, and they actually fixed it.

What YOU are running into is sheer speed and rough terrain. 50m/s is 111.8mph 70m/s is 156.6mph. Those speeds are only safe under really really flat, smooth roads. You're running over untouched countryside with a load on, most likely. The term is IMPACT. Wheels can only absorb so much of it before they no longer work.

I'm driving on smooth snow (North Pole of Star system Earth-like) with an unloaded 20t 8x8 with tons of suspension stroke available and 1.5m wheel diameter. There aren't bumps or things there, unless the game is assuming there are at these speeds. This is not real life. SE lakes and poles are very smooth.

And if I remember correctly, wheel damage because of driving was disabled as a solution.

If someone is having a problem after it's fixed, it means it's not really fixed or there's a new problem.

Its still happening now. I went 67m/s having fun and than suddenly pop goes the wheels and my fun ended.

I am probably the only one experiencing this with 1.195? I am traveling at roughly 30-35 m/s so 125Km/h. On triton on flat surfaces.

It might be the DAS script tho. And it's happening only when I have the containers partially loaded, 10 wheels, 4 large containers plus a large grid ore detector attached with an advanced rotor.

On the first large trip, with almost empty containers, I had no issue.

Currently having this problem with a prototype of mine. It has occurred as slow as 22m/s but at the same time has handled 250m/s bounces over smooth terrain without breaking while I purposefully try to destroy the thing....It is very inconsistent. Haven't had the problem in over a year and it seems to have reappeared recently. I am also using the DAS script and have wondered if it is playing a role but it still does it with the suspension strength manually set to 100.

I'm having this happen in the current build - 8x8 rover, certainly not overloaded (it's basically an enhanced respawn rover), and every now and then, in SP, a wheel or two spontaneously destroys itself... and just a few minutes ago, ALL EIGHT WHEELS detonated in rapid fashion, while I was going around 22 m/s...

I am an admin on a torch server and was able to mitigate the issue by running plugin called Grid Defender, and setting it to block all collision damage on all grids. Wheels no longer explode which tells me that it is in fact a collision damage issue.

With this plugin I noticed that wheels randomly behave strangely at the times I would have expected them to explode. Its as if their collision boxes expand for a few minutes and collide with everything. I have a feeling whatever is behind the collision expansion behavior is probably the same cause of the explosions. This is intermittent however when it does happen it affects all wheels on the grid at the same time.

Hey Mike Dude!

I also run a torch server, and am plagued with rover tires popping all the time! Where can I get that Grid Defender plugin? (I didn't see it on the torch website).

Cheers!

Casimir (aka BobDaRoss) made it. I believe he is merging it i to a new plugin called BobUtils and will be putting it on the torch site soon.

I recently have this problem too. Where wheels blows up randomly while driving or mining. Keen please help

I also have the same issue, but I noticed that wheels explode when riding in a certain area, so its not random. I tried riding at higher speed a few times at different wheels settings and they always exploded in the same area, but reducing speed to a certain point helped. I hope this informations helped.

Hello, Engineers!

Already fixed in v197.

Kind Regards
