Error message

Need More Information

I'm getting an error message when the game is trying to auto-save.

World's Star System 2025-08-15-12:09 failed to save. This can be caused by running out of memory or problems when writing files. Working on this world any longer may result in loss of progress. You can check the log file to find out more about what caused this error.

Where do I find the log file, or how do I fix this message?

There are terrabytes of space on the hard drive, so there isn't an issue with space on any of the hard drives installed on this system.

Hello Duane,

Thank you for reaching our forum with this problem.

The error you are seeing usually appears when the game encounters a problem writing the save data. While disk space is one possible cause, there can also be other factors, such as memory limits, access rights, or corrupted files.

You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

There are also our general workarounds and some other things you might want to try:

  • Verify your game files in Steam - right-click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files
  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file (it means your game configuration will be deleted) - you can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.
  • Delete ShaderCache folder - same access as above
  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated
  • Check memory usage - even with plenty of disk space available, very large worlds or long sessions can cause the game to run out of available memory. If possible, try reducing world size or restarting the game before saving.
  • Permissions - ensure the game has permission to write files in the %appdata% location. Running the game as administrator for testing can help confirm this.
  • Save under a new name - sometimes creating a new manual save instead of relying only on auto-save can bypass an error in the existing save structure.
  • Check mods (if used) - certain mods can create unusually large or complex save data. Try saving in a clean world without mods to see if the error persists.

If you can share the affected log file with us, along with details of the world (size, mods, single-player or multiplayer), we can investigate further.

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards,
