A simple 'Rail block' to move things along a surface, enabling elevators, Shipyard printers, etc.

A simple rail block which when blocks are attached, has a spline where a attachment would follow along the spline; it would have a 'rotor' type head, that can move along the surface of that block, for as far as needed, and any other block attached to the line of blocks.

The "rotor head" or rather "Rail head" can move either back, or forth, has a velocity control, clamp maths so it can slow down at the beginning or end of the spline.

The building possibilities with that would be railways, elevators, mining platforms, transport, moving platforms, and all other sorts of things that we really need in game, whether on asteroids, planets, stations, ships, or whatever, even large shipyard welders that would move along the rail to slowly 3D print a ship.

Planetary building really needs a rail, because you need elevators, you need drilling platforms that can move, you need transporters, or even a storage train to move along far distances, all that with minimal bugs. ( say perhaps theres a ice node some 5 km away, i would want to move my platform to the ice node and drill there, rather than fly a ship that could potentially crash because of the weight ).

Currently, we have to use buggy pistons to move stuff on a static grid, bug prone pistons that cause all sorts of physics anomalies when stacked or heavy, and start to wobble uncontrollably.

Things rails can be used for:

  • - Elevators
  • - Moving drill platforms x - y - and z
  • - Railguns, or catapulting things at a speed
  • - Transporting containers
  • - Trains
  • - Shipyard 3D printers
  • ( Literally anything that needs to move along a surface ).

some problems this block could solve:

  • - Players using pistons to move drills on a static grid
  • - Players building buggy, physics intensive, CPU intensive, Server computation draining trains using wheels, and other nonsensical contraptions: Example:

( This Is NOT efficient, and drains server resources ).

- Uncontrollable piston physics

I am reviving the request for a vanilla rail block,

Heres another feedback post some 6 years ago that also requested the rail: :https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/simple-rail-system-rail-blocktrain-block

Stormworks has "track" and "slider" blocks that I think is a good example of what the OP is talking about. These, however, do not really allow for the creation of trains, though there is a separate train system in the game.

There are plenty of tutorials on these blocks on YouTube. Search "Stormworks tracks and sliders" for an idea of what these blocks do and examples of how they are utilized.

yeah, sliders and tracks like the ones from stormworks would be glorious and have a lot of potential
