Thruster asisted steering

Probably not the first person ever to sugest that thrusters should be involved in roll, pitch and jaw. Especialy on larger ships that need to have multiple thrusters anyway. So it is a good chance there would be one for every posible direction. Maybe if not all, you could only assign one thruster to help gyros, one for each direction?

Gyroscopes are fun and all but sometimes it takes hundreds of them and i realy think we could save some weight that way.

Now imagine wheels didnt have steering, they could only go forward or backwards. And you needed gyroscopes to drag them along the ground in the direction you wanted. Thats the way thinghs are with ships now.

Even now if you turn off gyroscopes you can steer with trusters

Yes, only it would be a game feature not a mod.

Thx for your reply.

That would break nearly every construct everyone has. Thrusters apply force to the center of gravity. If the force was applied to the location of the thruster then every ship would spin out of control. This would add to the calculations per tick. Even if it was only while giving rotational input, that would make it so you have to manually stop rotations by rotating the opposite direction. That would add even more calculations and the potential for bugs.

For a vanilla workaround, attach a thruster to a sub grid such as a rotor or piston and use scripting to interpret rotational input into controlling the thrusters on sub grids.

"That would break nearly every construct everyone has." Its a beta game, everything is subject to change.

Realisticaly speaking if you had a large spaceship IRL it is more economical to steer with thrusters than to add thousands of tonnes of gyroscopes. You could use that space for cargo or other thinghs.

Same as water going cargo ships use rudders and Manoeuvring thruster (bow thruster or stern thruster).

If say for example Maersk tripe E class was designed with this game logic it wouldnt carry 18k+ containers, it would be filled up to the top with gyroscopes so it could turn its 200 000 ton self.

IRL that is all true. But this is a video game.

Changing how thrusters apply force so that you can get this realism/hardcore feature would have immeasurable backlash. Even if Keen made this an optional feature, how many people would really use it? Do you want to go on a hardcore/survival server and build something only to find the thrusters weren't balanced enough and the rotation from your thrusters was not strong enough and your ship flies itself into the ground?

I didnt sugest to have only thrusters to steer with , if you are implying that.

I sugested thruster asisted steering, not only truster steering.

Just look at it that way, you could assign a thruster to aid gyroscopes in every direction, like if you are turning left the front right and rear left thruster would go to full power to help gyroscopes turn faster.

Even if they werent placed exactly on the centre of mass gyroscopes would compensate for that as they do now.

I wish i had an example to show you.
