Steam Cloud bug, lack of info on usage of steam cloud, Community Moderator Issues

Investigating

Hi, as of a few days ago I've started having an issue with the Steam Cloud for when it comes to storing blueprints:

The blueprint window will open as usual but the blueprint won't save.

Disabling cloud saves to local without issue.

Few weeks prior to that, the same issue hit a friend of mine.

We're both players who've been playing for very long, from the days before planets were introduced. I have some 3600hs in the game, and never before have had this issue.

I've seen indications in the steam community that, as pointed by Dan2D3D (who to my understanding is part of Keen's staff), it may be due to the cloud being full. However, the game indicates that I have plenty of storage room in the steam cloud.

I also know for a fact that my friend has way more blueprints saved to his cloud than I do, which makes me believe that the explanation of "your cloud must be full" is not a good answer.

Now then, Dan2D3D also proceeded to mention that the cloud is not intended to be used as storage (Which to my understanding is the purpose of cloud services), and instead was intended to be used only to transfer files between computers. Whcih "gave problems to members using that option with only once PC".

If this is the case,

  • why is it even a part of the game? the same could be done with the steam workshop and it would avoid said already acknowledged "problems".
  • If it is intended for transfer only, why is that not stated anywhere within the game? I've been unable to find any tooltip, description or otherwise information about this. there's no warning message regarding this anywhere either, no pop-up when you enable or disable the option.

Dan also mentioned in a post that "it comes off by default", then again the oldest players I've known don't remember that being the case, they've had it on by default for a very long time. But then again, if it is "known to cause problems", why is there not a warning? Or why is it still in the game?

--

I also got rather worried by the answers of Dan, as he pointed out "It's just something I see every years, players enable the in-game Steam Cloud and they have problems when the cloud folder is full".

This tells me that the issue is known and it has not been addressed. This could be simply a bug or some poor UX design choices (a warning message when you enable the option goes a long way into reducing the amount of support tickets you get, as well as player frustration).

He also pointed out "I have reported to one of the SE Programmers and he told me there was no problems when he tried it."

This also worries me since it makes it sound like Keen and SE view problems as "Oh, it works fine on my side, user must be wrong". While Dan did provide the proper links for support I think it's inadequate to imply to the user that their problem is not real.

--

Dan then proceeded to close the thread, making any further replies or questions impossible. therefore, as stated by his own post, I'm here, asking for help on the issue regarding the steam cloud bug.

I hope for a better explanation than "Your folder is full", and some clarification as to, if as Dan mentioned, it's a "so well known issue", why is it not hinted at by the game itself, or why is it still in the game.

--

Thanks in advance, finally I leave you with a link to the post in question.

Hello!

Thank you for contacting us.

Please note that in Space Engineers, Steam Cloud is designed exclusively for Blueprints. Cloud support for saving world files, game settings, and similar data has not been implemented.

Regarding the issue you're experiencing with uploading Blueprints despite having available storage on the Cloud, we are moving this ticket to our support page, where our QA team will take care of you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Kind Regards,

Keen Software House

Hello engineer,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

We have created an internal ticket to investigate this further. In the meantime, you can disable cloud saving to store new blueprints (BPs) locally on your device by navigating to Options > Game, unchecking the Cloud option, and clicking OK to save the changes. Alternatively, you can publish your blueprints from the cloud to Mod.io or the Steam Workshop and then delete those blueprints from the cloud to free up space for new uploads. When publishing on these platforms, you can set the blueprints to private, ensuring only you can access them. This also allows you to use the blueprints on other devices via Mod.io or Steam. For detailed instructions, please visit this page and refer to the "How to Share Blueprints" section.

We will update this thread as soon as we have more information from our internal testing. Please note that this process may take some time, and we kindly ask for your patience.

Kind Regards,

Keen Software House: QA Department

Yes, I've already switched to local storage in the meantime.

Thanks for the update.

Heya. I have this problem too and with the help of someone else i've figured out a fix. Sort your cloud blueprints by latest and delete the latest blueprint. Edit: this only worked once. It seems blueprints get corrupted? After a bit of testing. It seems that if you delete like 4 blueprints from the cloud. You can save 4 others to the cloud. Seems to be a sort of storage limit? although there isnt any exceeding of that limit

Hello Charles,

Thanks for reaching our forum with this problem.

We are sorry to hear you're having trouble saving blueprints when cloud saving is enabled.

Just to confirm a few details so we can help troubleshoot:

  • Are you seeing any specific error message when the save fails?
  • Have you tried disabling and re-enabling Steam Cloud for Space Engineers via Steam’s game properties? Sometimes this can help refresh the sync.
  • Are you experiencing any issues with Steam Cloud syncing in other games, or is this only happening in Space Engineers?

Since you mentioned you're able to save locally, that’s a good sign that the blueprint system itself is working - this sounds like it may be cloud-specific.

In the meantime, you might want to try the following steps:

  1. Go to your Steam Library, right-click on Space EngineersPropertiesGeneral, and toggle Steam Cloud Off and back On.
  2. Try creating and saving a small blueprint again with Cloud enabled.
  3. If the issue persists, please send us your game log from a session where the cloud save fails. This can help us dig deeper.
You can access your log files by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for your assistance.

I tried to toggle the Steam Cloud sync, in the menu you suggested, but it still didn't do anything. While I was doing that I noticed that Steam has my Cloud usage as basically full, but the in-game blueprint amount is only half. So, maybe that has something to do with it? Also, I'm not 100% sure which file you want me to attach. I tried the LastSession.sbl and the SpaceEngineers.cfg files, but they say are not valid types. Which file do you need?

Thanks, Charles

I haven't heard anything from this in 22 days, not sure why. Just be aware, if you return, that I happened to stumble across "fixing" the issue. I decided to go back through my cloud blueprints, deleted a bunch I'm not using anymore, and now I can save new blueprints in the cloud. So, now you guys have to figure out why steam is showing much less blueprint space than in game.

Thanks,

Charles

Hello Charles,

Thank you for providing additional details, and we sincerely apologize for the delayed response to this thread.

Since you're able to save blueprints locally but not to the cloud, it's likely that your cloud storage is full. You may notice that deleting some blueprints temporarily frees up space, but it fills up again. Additionally, we are aware of an issue where players are unable to save blueprints to the cloud even when sufficient space appears to be available. This issue is currently under investigation, as noted in the following thread;

https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/44721

In the meantime, we recommend disabling cloud saving to store new blueprints locally on your device. You can do this by going to Options > Game, unchecking the Cloud option, and clicking OK to save the changes.

Alternatively, you can publish your blueprints from the cloud to Mod.io or the Steam Workshop, and then delete them from the cloud to free up space. When publishing, you can set the visibility to Private so that only you can access them. This also allows you to access your blueprints from other devices via Mod.io or Steam Workshop.

For step-by-step instructions, please refer to the “How to Share Blueprints” section on this page.

We are merging this thread with the one mentioned above, where the issue is originally reported.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards,

Keen Software House: QA Department
