Game crashing on launch, memory allocation issue

Jonathan shared this bug 22 months ago
Solved

Hello, I'm having an issue with space engineers launching. Seems to be an issue with the game not allocating any memory for the game, I have plenty free (have 16gb ram and have a gtx980 with 4gb of video memory). To go with this it's the only game having this issue. I went through the support pages and tried reinstalling, validation, making sure nothing was running, cleaning out disk space. and doing the .net/directx stuff you have posted. I tried reverting back to older version as well as I have played the game successfully in the past with the same pc I'm currently using. Not sure what issue could be as everything looks as though it should work.

Hello, Jonathan!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

As I'm not sure what you have tried, please try any of the following that you have not:

  • Verify your game files in Steam

  • Right click on Space Engineers in Steam Library → Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files

/zkZxPdzzw0M8202jr4lhkdpTWOnknMtgxb4ZEs3CJ2Pk0cCl2NhFQ_itT8aWvSPv0qyoMyQQN8I8I-pJoA13THhH62tYLRrV_TWC_AqKhufor-EdYNxcG7GKh0TWJTeUIzNC8BsOPnnARmzyQg

  • Delete SpaceEngineers.cfg file

  • It means your game configuration will be deleted
  • You can access your SpaceEngineers.cfg by typing %appdata% into your Windows search bar and you will be redirected to the hidden Roaming folder. After that just follow: \Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

  • Delete ShaderCache folder

  • Back up your whole Space Engineers Roaming folder and delete it
  • Restart Steam
  • Reinstall VC Redist 2017
  • Update graphic drivers
  • Reinstall the game
  • Make sure your operating system is fully updated

Are you running anything else while playing the game? Could you check your task manager to see where the memory is being used? Is it possible that something else is running with high usage?

Is this happening every time you launch the game? Do you ever get into the game at all? How far are you getting? Also, I assume this is a PC rather than a laptop, could you confirm? The log is fairly short but know you do say 'PC'

Could you also supply your Vrage log too?

Kind Regards

Hello, I've tried everything on that list already except the "Reinstall VC Redist 2017" until now but that didn't do anything either.

Nothing else is running, this happens every time I launch the game, I don't get into the game at all as it instantly crashes, this is a PC.

I have tried reverting to every older version available and after going back to an much older version the game launches but the memory still isn't allocated so you can't play the game. In the menu I've already tried toggling and untoggling just about everything already. Seems like something is preventing the memory from being accessed and it's only this game that has that issue, not sure what could be causing it.

Looks like even older versions like 1.190 and before work. Would like to play the most recent version so I can use mods though.

Looks like update 1.194 (Frostbite) is where the error starts, every update past that is broken.

Neverminded thought I had 1.193 working but it looks as though that isn't running today. Looks like its 1.192 (economy) that's breaking it as I have 1.191 as my latest working version, my bad.

Alright, so if you start at 1.191 and upgrade to 1.192 then to 1.193 you can play up to 1.193. If you upgrade past that it breaks still and also messed up 1.192 and 1.193.

Hello, Jonathon!

If you are able to run the game in a previous version, can you please provide a log from this? Can you also list your PC specs and let us know if you are running anything else at the time when you play the game usually? Do you also have a firewall or antivirus installed?

Kind Regards

Hello, after spending a couple weeks trying to debug it I found doing a hard reset on windows is what ended up fixing things. I assume some part of my windows install was broken (whatever it was also prevented soft windows resets). It seems like space engineers likely had an update to their ram allocation around that update and that's what ended up breaking things. I looked through my windows events and found Docker also broke due to this. Every other application seemed to work fine however.

Just to clarify, everything is working now. The fix was to reset windows.
