Request access to Ore Detector GPS locations

I would like access to the GPS coordinates generated by ore detectors. Preferably both in-game access, via programming block, and access for modders via the mod APIs.

I understand how the ore detector works and that it can be process intensive, so I'm not asking for access to all ore, or all ore locations. Just the locations that the detector pops up on the HUD. It doesn't even need to be real-time access -- an update delay of 5-10 seconds would be fine. Even a full minute delay would be usable.

Having access to these locations would allow GPS coordinates to be created and autopilots and jump drives to be directed to them. It also provides engineering opportunities for building prospecting and mining drones.

This is the last piece missing in the puzzle of fully autonomous game-play. If you could use this as an input for programming block, you could make the game to be played itself :-).

Wouldn't that be awesome? lol

I think it would open up a new style of play and a new game loop, something akin to a management-sim. The player would focus on managing and directing their drone fleet to grow their operation.

This also blends well with players that want to focus on PvE and PvP game loops, and provides the opportunity for faction members to specialize in their activities.

I thin along with gps locations it would be good to have access to ore names so we could log which ore and where it was located.

Status has been changed to "Needs More Information." I'm not sure what information you need or want, but I'll try to elaborate.

As stated in the ticket, I would like access to the GPS coordinates generated by ore detectors. The specific access method is open for discussion. Some ideas:

  • A scripting interface that could be used in programmable blocks that provides a GPS coordinate to ores when they are detected by an Ore Detector block. Then a script could make a GPS waypoint from that, or update the waypoints in a remote control block or other AI block.
  • A toggle box on the Ore Detector that automatically creates a GPS waypoint when a deposit is identified (instead of just displaying a signal on the HUD, it would create a GPS at the location of the ore).
  • A modding API interface that can be used to request GPS coordinates from Ore Detector blocks when ores are detected. Or an event listener that could be hooked to respond when ores are detected.

Maybe there are other possibilities as well. The intended use case would be to use these GPS waypoints as jump destinations for jump drives, or as navigation waypoints for AI blocks. There may be other possibilities as well, but those are the ones that are immediately obvious to me.

Sigh. Why set the status to "Needs More Information" if you are just going to close it 24 hours later with "Not Enough Votes?" smh.
