Ship drills fail to drill and collect surface rocks

captainbladej52 shared this bug 3 years ago
Won't Fix

Just like it sounds I was able to get some video evidence for this pesky bug. Essentially I discovered a specific chain of events that can cause the ship tool drills to no longer drill and collect material from surface rocks. Video evidence linked below.

Reproduction Steps:

1: have a flying miner and a ground miner such as a rover present equipped with drills.

2: take a small hit of material from the surface rock using the flying miner

3: take a small hit of material from the ground using the flying miner

4: switch to the ground mine rover and take a hit of material from the surface rock. best if drill head touches the ground first as the rover should be unable to collect anything other than trace material.

5: go back to the flying miner and remove the drills currently there.

6: connect a new drill to the flying miner via a subgrid. subgrid drill should be unable to collect anything from the rock at all. small trace materials might possibly be picked up.

7: switch to the ground miner and remove the onboard drill

8: replace the drill with a subgrid drill and attempt to mine.

9: from here on you should be unable to collect anything other than trace materials even if you replace the subgrid drills with actual grid drills.

Actual results: ship drills lose the ability to drill surface rocks on modded or vanilla servers

Expected results: ship drills should be able to drill surface rocks.

Notes: there is a small bit of randomness to this process. In some instances you might pick up small trace amounts of material, in other instances you will get nothing. trace material never amounts to more than a few hundred kilos. Large swaths of material can be broken up and the drills pick up far less material than they should have. Trace material is picked up randomly and behaves as though the drill head is farther away from the material than is indicated visually. I believe this could be a combination of collision models and possible code with the drills themselves though I am not sure. Video is set as unlisted on youtube and the link will be needed to share and view it.

Hello, Engineer!

Thank you for contacting us. Could you please provide us with a save of your world or a blueprint of your ship?

Thank you!

The wheeled vehicle that was used in the video is the default buggy that Keen gives in the starting projectors on a planet, save with a couple extra gyros and a couple of turrets. For the flying miner it's an older vanilla blueprint of mine. The particular world I used is a testing world of mine that I use for bug testing and mod testing. I tested with mods on and with mods off and even on a clean world that had never been touched, yet the results were the same. I placed a beacon and a spawn point at the location of the surface boulder that should assist when spawning into the world. you should also find a copy of the buggy and mining vehicle parked near the rock.

Hello!

Thank you for your world and blueprint! I've tried to reproduce this issue but without success. Ores from the boulder were collected. I would recommend you to delete your SpaceEngineers.cfg file and ShaderCache file (it means your game configuration will be deleted), verify your game files in Steam and try it again.

Thank you.

I thought I had replied to this but apparently I hadn't. I tried doing this but there was no effect on the issue. The boulder still would fail to collect 90% of the time, and the 10% that it did collect material was little more than trace amounts as demonstrated in the video.

I am also experiencing this bug as described by others in this thread. To add though, I do get around the bug by reloading the game. After which, the drills seem to work for a short while before bugging out again. (I think the trigger is change of control aka get in/out of the cockpit) nope not this. This might explain why Keen haven't been able to immediately reproduce it.

The most recent occurrence was after a game load. control of character, getting into the small grid vehicle. drove 3km where I was unable to mine boulder. save. (character still in small grid cockpit) reload. still unable to mine boulder. used hand drill - able to mine boulder - save/reload ( in cockpit) - small grid able to mine boulder

Hello, Engineers!

I appreciate this thread is quite old. Is this still a problem that persists with you? If it has since been resolved, I will close the thread for you :)

Hello, Engineers!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.

Kind Regards
