Laser Designation or Range Finders

Considered (Not Planned)

I know that there is a mod that allows you to laser designate objects in the distance but we should have it in vanilla, a laser designator that gives you the range of the object in front of you. A small one for short distances (20 to 30 km) and a large one for 100km+ distances. make it like a jump drive that recharges after it's used. It'll be such a handy tool especially if you're flying towards an asteroid, so you should know how far it is and when will you start breaking.

There are easy to use scripts for this.

But alot of easy to use sripts should be features in the normal games.

I wonder if keen will ever take this step altough i really understand their position it will divide alot of people when hey decide if certain things will or will not be in the vanilla game.

This seems like a really basic idea. It would be nice to know how far away an asteroid is when you are flying towards it. Even just add it by defaul to the cross hair when in a cockpit or control console.

As Steve said this is already possible and easy to do via scripts, having a specific block though would be nice but it would have to somehow be configured up with a display screen of some sort or maybe make the display screen part of the block?

Can someone pls link a script that does this?

Edit: Found something, but it is pretty old. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=532272288

This here seems to have more features: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=823520451

Very much like to see this. Would aid in combat initiation when your opponent is being cagey and not broadcasting, and would even the playing field a bit on radar scripts.

This would be cool but I'd also really like a 1x1x1 block that would designate enemy targets for slave turrets, literally this mod but vanilla. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1686252385&searchtext=ma+designator

I was thinking about this just the other day. It can be really hard to judge the distance to asteroids and it would be handy to have a way to know how far away they are. The OP suggests 20-30km or 100km+ but that seems overkill. I can't see that far. Really 5km would probably be sufficient. 2km on small grid maybe.

I envisioned a block that you place like a light or a sensor facing forward on your ship.

Please combine these. https://support.keenswh.com/spaceengineers/pc/topic/measure-distances-with-crosshair

One comment on the other topic suggests a tool for player use. I think that's a clever idea. Maybe give it shorter range, 500m or something.

They're two different things, and there are things you could build with, and into, a range-finding block that you would not be able to with a simple crosshair distance measuring tool.

the knowledge of the distance (and other info too) of an object in space is critical to make space simulation immersive, explorative and rewarding :)
