Oculus, Vive, Virtual Reality Support

I genuinely just wanna put on the headset and have the awareness of being immersed in Space Engineers.. The headset support would be my number one go to request for this game. The Free-look is already so nice in game, and even works on foot. When we're rooted to a console or seat We could enable leaning or looking around so you could peek over screens or around support pillars. A lot of people will probably bring up controls but Personally I could use the keyboard and mouse in VR and be pretty happy with it.

With the xbox Version along the way I imagine Keen has already gone through the paces of adapting controller support. But if they ever took the time to work out a sort of TiltBrush style toolbar or a pipboy kind of UI for controllers that'd be insane! At the end of the day though, We just wanna sit at our computer desk and dawn on a headset to look around.

Holy jeez, out of everything. You would expect the suggestion to have alot more attention. I mean, I would absolutely fan-boy space engineers in VR, even go out and purchase a headset myself if I heard SE was getting some virtual reality attention fit in.

I'm not sure how difficult or challenging it would be to implement an official support branch for VR, however if you were to ask me, it would likely bring alot more attention to the game alongside that. Even just freelooking would be a hell of a step forward for Space engineers.

Would freak the heck out over it. :p

That is also something I would love to see. I cannot even imagine how this game would be fun in VR.

Already tried different things with TriDef, but not much luck there 😔

They haven't even fix AMD problem. And admitted it glitch was in the alpha beta of Frostbite. Breaking the game alot players like my self. Aboadon ME long before for being complete like miniing wars. You want them to release a VR version.

This company is starting it end run of SE and breaking before they leave it to die.

So now full controller support is available, next should be VR. One small step for Keen, one giant leap for VR enthusiasts.

I would come back playing SE again if VR support would be available. Even imperfect one for testing. Even just a VR view with no or incomplete hand controls. Come on Keen, you can do it! You have a working prototype in the code base, it just wasn't perfect. Please make it available optionally.

Yup, a simple VR view with no hand control would be already cool!

VR support for Space Engineers would be epic! And what with the performance update coming this game would be way out from anything out there currently and coming. Just being able to play in VR would practically reinvent the game, and that's not getting into combat... The VR enthusiasts wouldn't hesitate either, and I can't see how that's bad since this game seems to be tucked away into it's own little pocket of a community right now.

Absolutely, now that Half Life Alyx is out, Space Engineers VR would be the next big thing!

we are missing a good space game in VR

That is exactly what I wanted to write as well. High resolution HMDs are coming...

Add it it's so important!

I would gladly pay for a VR update, or VR-native version of Space Engineers. I've asked the question during a live-stream Q&A and got the same answer - It's not in their current priorities. Only one way to change this is if enough people vote for it to bring it to Keen's attention. Planets got enough votes - we have planets now. Not sure how many people have a VR headset, and would it be a financially-viable endeavour for KSH. Meanwhile, I'll keep supporting Keen by buying whatever DLC they come up with. As long as they keep working on this marvellous gem of a game. But you got my vote. I would LOVE to play this game in VR someday...

Let's be constructive. I'm thinking about including the "VR support" project to the list of ideas I plan to work on after finishing the Multigrid Projector.

I bought a VR headset (HP G2) specifically to see my SE creations/worlds in their real 3D beauty. It works for some degree using VorpX (see my post below).

Proper VR support would mean adding the following features with a client plugin, which is not easy, but doable:

  • OpenVR support (rendering, tracking)
  • Showing the hands/helmet/body properly in VR (welder/grinder/guns naturally in hand)
  • Removing the HUD by default
  • Creating a new VR native interface for the basic build/control functionality
  • Positioning the remaining UI menus conveniently in 3D space when they appear or overlay them to the blocks/LCDs naturally (like real displays)
  • Using the hand controllers instead of the mouse for all remaining UI menus
  • Optional VR specific optimizations / convenience features (like narrowing view of fast motion, etc.)
  • Dynamically tuning the game's graphics settings in order to keep up the optimal frame rate, which is very important in VR
  • Anti-cheat: VR players should not have too much unfair advantages above normal ones (guns should not work if pushed through walls, etc.)

If you think the above is doable, please consider supporting me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/semods

I know it's a tech demo, but the base engine seems to already have been implemented in VR: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1142180/SE_VR_World_Demo/

I'd purchase a VR edition of the game, and know a few of my friends would as well. They already play SE 4 or 5 times a week.

Completely different engine. It's Unreal Engine 4 with ported assets.

Space Engineers works in VR using a "big hack" called VorpX.

It is far from perfect, but at least you can see your creations in VR.

It takes some time to set up, configure and get used to. You also need a quite beefy machine. But it may worth a try if you already have a VR headset at hand.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated in any way with VorpX. This is not an ad. Just sharing my experience.

I was looking to see if there was any news on VR support and found this old thread...

Consider this a massive +1 for VR support

I was wondering too. I'm quite surprised the topic hasn't moved anywhere in months... years even.

The community is in the process of adding "proper" VR support:

https://github.com/Math0424/SpaceEngineersVR/

Stereo view works with VR HDMs containing parallel displays, but currently broken with "canted" ones where the display are in an angle. There may be stability issues with certain HMDs.

Steam VR controller bindings already work. Walking/flying around works with the jetpack. Flying ships is still broken (ship does not move), we investigate this.

More is planned as time allows: Hand visuals following controllers (IK), virtualized HUD / UI controls (wrist "tablet"), tools to hold in your own hand and more.

It can be compiled from source, currently. Eventually it should be published via the Plugin Loader, but there are still some technical issues to overcome before that can happen.

Currently it is enough for an "OMG!" experience when you try it for the first time, then some motion sickness shortly after. :)

Keen decided not to do it, so we will.
