Random Game Freeze since 1.194 Update

Flávio Machado shared this bug 4 years ago
Won't Fix

I'm having some problems since the last update. For some reason during gameplay my game just freezes and stops responding for some minutes and come back. Sometimes I have to force close the game.

Never had this problem since the last major update.

My PC:

Ryzen 9 3900x

16gb ram

1080ti

Latest Nvidia Drive.

I tried verifying files integrity, did a full reinstall. Tha freezes still persists.

I've been having this too since the update. It's driving me a bit nuts. It seems to always come back, but it could wait between a couple seconds to what feels like a couple minutes.

Also on a Ryzen 9 3900x, with 32gb ram and a 1080Ti.

Can confirm random freezes. Happens on different (survival and creative) maps in SP game, which were fine before update.

Doesnt seem to matter how many or few grids are in world.

Started to occur after Frostbite update. So i far i've managed to observe one game thread suddenly having higher load during freeze, but not maxing out CPU core. Otherwise still enough system resources to run the game. Sometimes Windows considers SE "not responding" and requires force quit.

Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, GTX 950. Fresh Windows 10 install.

Change "Quality preset" to medium, then check to see if the freezes are gone.

Then change the separate settings one by one to figure out what one is causing the issue.

photo

I have them at medium anyway (GTX950 isnt exactly fastest thing on planet :)

Changing graphics settings didnt seem to matter. Most likely this isnt GPU related problem. As far as i can see from system behavior and other reports it may be Ryzen system specific. I might be wrong of course.

Resetting quality preset didn't fix it? even if you are using medium settings already, reset the quality preset, the option at the top of graphics setting to medium.. the act of resetting it fixed the stutters for me, and another who I suggested it to over on the keen forums too.

If you have tried and it didn't fix it then the issue must be a different one.

Havent done it exactly like that, just played around with some settings. I'll give it a try anyway, nothing to loose.. Thanks!

Maybe i should delete all graphics preferences. Anyone knows what exactly to delete in SE appdata folder?

photo
1

Ahhh.. yeah it's the quality preset that you want to change, not the separate setting individually.. do the quality preset first, then check to see if the stutter has gone.. then after that change whatever separate settings individually.

You don't need to delete the graphics preferences, just changing the preset is enough.

UPDATE: Changing it to medium preset did not work. Freezes still occur.

From what I can tell there are some different types of game freezes, it seems what I was suffering is a separate problem to yours.

photo

Can confirm freezes still occurring after hotfix 1.194.081. While timing seems to be random, freeze will always almost max out one CPU core (according to HWMonitor max load on that core was 95% ). Looks like it is Ryzen thing indeed.

Also graphic presets dont have an effect on this bug.

Hello everyone with AMD CPUs also having this problem.

I understand that the devs were unable to reproduce this problem on their AMD builds. I tried to reason out why, so I focused on the logic of local appdata files on the user's end that the devs would probably regularly rebuild, and I think I found a solution:

Please try deleting your Space Engineers Shader Cache folder, it's in:

\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\ShaderCache2

(Open the appdata folder by typing " %appdata% " in your Windows Start Search bar.)

For reference, my game also ran fine in 1.193 but began the stuttering problem without bottlenecking CPU, GPU, and RAM during the Open Beta and when 1.194 went live. My specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core Processor

NVIDIA GeForce 1660 SUPER

16GB RAM

If you are sure that you are experiencing the AMD Ryzen CPU problem, please let me know if deleting shader cache2 folder works for you.

Thanks,

- Kamu

Did that already. Did a full reinstall of the game, deleted almost the entire folder inside APPDATA (left only saves and blueprints).

The game still freezes. Had a lot of problems yesterday recording the new scenario.

We have those random freezes when a player connects to the server or when auto save happens.

This creates lag spikes that last 5-10s each time a player connects.

photo

If i place the new "Gate Block" from frostbite update and attach blocks to them, after a few seconds the game freeze.

photo
2

Still happening :( more frequently while I was trying the new *campaign* but its doing it in my own games now :(

photo

yeah, saving and Player seems to be a problem now :(

Game Randomly Freezes since I moved to AMD Ryzen 5 3600, same graphic cards gtx 1060.

Looking at cpu, when it freezes CPU 2 goes above 100% then returns to normal.

I have the same problem on an AMD-based PC: while playing the game randomly freezes for about 20s, then it goes on with what it was doing; this happens very often unfortunately, it's frustrating

I've just bought and installed the game on steam, so I'm sure I have no remnants from previous versions/installs

For now I'm only playing offline, trying to understand how SE works, so it's not tied to multiplayer configurations

Thanks for any support

PC CONFIGURATION:

AMD Ryzen 3900x (motherboard chipset: X570)

32GB RAM

Nvidia RTX2070 super, 8GB- Latest Nvidia WHQL drivers

Latest version of the game, no beta, no mods, no overclocking

Also having this issue, on a Ryzen 3600X with an NVIDIA RTX 2060.

There does not seem to be any pattern with the freezes. They occur seemingly randomly, sometimes even while starting up the game (i.e. during the introduction/logo, or while loading the main menu).

Important to note that the whole PC is not freezing, just Space Engineers becomes unresponsive. It can be closed with task manager and restarted.

Unfortunately the freezing is quite frequent, several times per hour, it can happen 2-3 times in the space of 10 minutes and then not at all for 40 minutes. Log files do not show anything of note. I've had one error message in 20+ freezes, which is attached.

I'm wondering what chipset(s) our motherboards use... Mine is an X570, for what is worth

Next step would probably be investigating any compiler optimisations used by the developers, since this problem would appear to affect a disproportionate number of AMD ryzen's users...

photo

I'm on B450 chipset. (MSI Mortar Max) and Ryzen 3600.

Latest patches havent changed much as far as i have seen.

photo
1

Thanks, so we're taking about at least two different AMD chipsets here..

Then it'd not appear to be chipset-related, but more likely cpu-related instead

Nothing more we can do, other than waiting for the devs to look into this

I volunteer for testing new builds on my PC, if useful for the devs.

Game froze on intro sequence.

This freeze had been bugging me for a while so I had Process Explorer watching it in the background. Screenshots are attached.

PEThreadList shows a "freeze" which was eventually recovered by simply waiting, the other two images show states where Space Engineers hung unrecoverably.

In it's hung/frozen state SpaceEngineers.exe alternates between the thread list shown in PEThreadList2 and PEThreadList3 - msvcrt.dll and DINPUT8.dll swap positions over and over again until the game is forcibly closed.

Hope that helps.

Also worth noting that some people have had success with replacing the VRage.Library.dll with the one in the Mod SDK, as detailed here:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/0/2259060348500655858/

I'll test this out and report back.

I only bought the game at version 1.194 this problem has been there since day 1. The game is more or less unplayable with the random freezes sometimes taking as long as ten minutes.

In the system monitor I can see that the game is only using 150Mb of RAM, which can't possibly be desirable.

Have completely reinstalled the game, updated nvidia, disabled steam overlay tried fullscreen windowed and fullscreen, verified files and worked through the largely useless lists of fixes for crashes and freezes provided by Keen.

This is a critical bug if I've ever seen one...

photo

im using an AMZ RYZEN 9 3950X AND SAME FREEZING, THE FUCK KEEN, AMD HATING BASTARDS

photo

X570 here too.

I'm using the latest AMD chipset drivers too, updated last night, issue is still happening though.

photo

Same issue on a Ryzen 3600, nigh-fresh Windows install (just Steam and other games). I've never even installed the versions before 1.194.

Solved by running it through Steam's Proton (5.0) on Linux. Worked without a hitch after applying the tricks at https://www.protondb.com/app/244850 and https://github.com/Linux74656/SpaceEngineersLinuxPatches (gcServer plus the 4 winetricks installs). Ironic, considering this game was largely the reason I bought Windows...

Ryzen 1700x / x370 MB / 32GB 3000Mhz RAM / GTX 1060 6GB

I'm on 1.194.207 and I've installed the latest AMD chipset drivers as mentioned elsewhere and have not had any lockups/freezes since. It did happen on older versions of the game / older chipset drivers and on my 3800X as well (which I've not tried since).

photo

Using an AMD Ryzen 3 3700X, 32GB of ram, GTX 1080ti. Constant freezes esp. when entering blueprints, opening G menu, opening the items menu in creative mode. Has made the game almost unplayable, seems all load during the freezes is concentrated on one core. During the freezes sometimes all textures seem to reload repeatedly. I'm on 1.194.207, have the newest drivers.

up. it is not fixed so far

photo

Can confirm bug is still present in version 1.194.211

Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB RAM, GTX 950, Win10

photo

Agree, I have a 3900x, 32gb, RTX 2080s, win10, still happening and quite annoying. I cannot even play through the Vanilla campaigns without it crashing now.

photo

I Found an unofficial fix for this, worked for me. this should do the job until keen fixes it officially.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/0/2259060348500655858/?ctp=4

The unofficial fix replace/symlink the original VRage.Library.dll with the one from the mod SDK works for me as well.

Still have < 1 sec freezes occasionally, but game is actually playable right now.

photo

I did not have this bug in intel, now I have amd 3900x and my game crashes radomly every few minutes

photo

Hello, everyone,

This issue related to AMD processors should be already fixed. Can you please confirm?

Thank you.
