[1.193.022] Block LODs Loading Improperly

Harbinger Ace shared this bug 4 years ago
Won't Fix

On occasion, block LODs, as well as their full-resolution textures, will randomly turn invisible. This is not the same as the placement bug, since it occurs on faces which never turn invisible.

The LODs usually fix themselves upon transition (moving away so another LOD appears, then moving back). However, this bug appears quite frequent.

I can confirm mods are not responsible for this bug; I have encountered this issue in several vanilla servers, hosted by myself and friends, as well as one dedicated server.

The attached images show typical behavior of this bug.

Hello, Engineer!

Could you please provide us with more information regarding the issue you reported including a save of your world? To report a bug into our system it is necessary to have reliable steps to reproduce in order for programmers to fix it.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

This bug appears to happen one in every four world startups. As far as I have seen, it is more common on small grids, but can occur on large grids and stations.

Repetition is fairly simple:

  1. Load up a world with at least 10 small grids (triggers more often with more grids). Place all but one behind the player view.
  2. Fly or pan towards and away from the one grid in front of the player repeatedly. The distance must be enough to trigger LOD models.
  3. One or two LOD textures, or full-resolution textures, should turn invisible. Only certain block faces should turn invisible (equilateral triangle on inv. corner, slope face on slope, etc).
  4. If the bug does not trigger, exit the world completely and reload.

The fact the bug does not happen every world load suggests it's an issue with the given session.

Included in this comment is a vanilla world where the LOD issue occurs regularly. The included log includes several world entries; the final session start is a vanilla world where the bug occurred. From prior observations, the other sessions should have no bearing on the bug's appearance.

At this time, I cannot provide a log including only the vanilla world. Naturally, once I begin proper testing, everything works perfectly fine. Once I can observe the bug solely in vanilla, I will provide the log. Should I include the VRage Render log, as well?

Hello, Engineer!

Thank you for your response and the save, however we had no luck to reproduce the issue. Could you please provide us with a video? What graphic quality presets do you use and does it happen at all of them? Also we would appreciate VRage Render logs and any additional information you can provide.

Thank you for your patience.

I've managed to reproduce the bug in a vanilla world after freshly booting the game, and I even managed to record it! I have attached both the game log and the VRage log to this reply. The video is too large to attach, so I have uploaded it to Youtube (click here!). This video is the same session in which the logs were generated.

Attached is also an image with my graphics settings. Due to the randomness of this bug, I have been unable to observe it on other settings. It may very well happen, I just haven't been able to trigger it.

Unfortunately, there is not much besides what I have already covered. There are a few notes I can make:

  • Occurs both in player (F6) and spectator camera (F8)
  • Occurs at any LOD range, not just the full-resolution range
  • Is not caused by computer's RAM usage (game engine usage not tested)
  • Is not caused by graphics card driver issues (outdated and updated drivers both experience the bug)
  • Should not be affected by block skins (only tested with default skin)
  • Affects all blocks; armor blocks will have one type of face vanish, while non-armor blocks will disappear entirely
  • Appears to be an inconsistent lag during LOD transition
  • My prior comment stating the bug appears in one in four session starts may be incorrect

Thank you for the continued effort on this bug. Even if it proves unsolvable or user-specific, the fact you're determined to fix it means a lot. I hope this helps.

Hello, Harbinger Ace,

I see that this thread is quite old as well as your last comments here. Can I please ask if you are still experiencing it even nowadays (as for v197.181)? If yes, does the behavior changed anyhow through out the time and game fixes/updates or it is still the very same for you? Can you share me some newer save of the world where this is happening already with affected grids, please?

If no, thanks for confirming that the issue is gone for you and probably was fixed in the meantime through various game updates and fixes.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Kind Regards

Hello, Engineer!

Because there is no new comment from you, and we are unable to reproduce the issue on our own, I will close this thread now as outdated.

If you or any other player will experience this issue again, please make a new thread and provide all needed info there.

Thank you for understanding.

Kind Regards
