solar panels in space producing electricity in the shadow of the earth ?

Astrée shared this bug 4 years ago
Solved

As the title says, I'm surprised my solar panels on my space station still produce electricity at full power when in the shadow of Earth

I thought I saw somewhere that if there is nothing in front of the solar panel for 300m, then nothing is considered in front of the solar panel. This makes sense from not having to consider too much about light interaction. Otherwise a large ship over the planet would make a huge shadow, which would look cool but would tank graphics performance.

Fck this. It is still in game and this post is 9 months ago? This is not even hard to handle, cause even small asteroids cast shadows. For example my Solar panals still work IN the shadow of the fcking planet -__-

Yeah, a lot of small bugs persist for more than one year, but we have new DLC each 3 months.

Seems dead project now

Blocking light by asteroids and not by planet and moons makes no sense. As there are much less planets and moons than asteroids to take the calculations into account from. Being eclipsed by a planet/moon for minutes should be simple to compute with a sphere approximating it's size and some vector magic.

it is not necessarily about it being simple but about it being performance heavy (also one cannot assert how it should be achieved without knowing how the engine works) - from what i understand when in space the solar panels (and oxygen farms) use raycasting to detect where the sun is, the same way ore detectors work, which is very processing intensive (hence why ore detectors have a very limited range) - so the solar panels check for 100m and that is it - i don't necessarily agree that this should be hardcoded and unmoddable, but it currently appears to be so

it should be noted that solar panels work properly again once they are near to a planet or moon - my testing showed they start to correctly detect if they are blocked once default earth like gravity is above 0.52G, which is orders of magnitude further away from the planet than the 100m in space - therefore i suspect they are using a different method for solar panels when close to a planet (or it just allows the performance hit since it isn't having to track lots of asteroids)

Yea. It'd be really nice to get that extra feel of survival difficulty, especially on asteroids.

Also, though rare, if during an eclipse from a faraway planet would affect the power output, now that'd be a nice touch. :)

Need more votes. I hope the community sees this as a feature.

i don't necessarily want them to go crazy with long range eclipses - but when near enough to a planet that it is a large obstruction it would be nice to not be able to use solar power or oxygen farms when the sun is blocked

since the solar detection works as one would expect when very near a planet (i found it was above 0.52G for default earth like), it would be nice if this range was customizable as an advanced feature or moddable (i have yet to find any mods for this, so it may well be a hard coded feature)

it really is immersion breaking to have solar panels operating when in total darkness, which can be for many hours if using realistic day lengths - and is actually the only thing i have found in years of playing that really made me question the extent to which i can enjoy a survival challenge in SE which utilises realism options and mods - i.e. pretty much everything else which has a significant impact on survival realism can be modded except this

i do hope there is further consideration of making this moddable (or some direction as to which files i would need to modify myself would be appreciated)

Hello,

Thank you for this. I have reported your issue.

Kind regards,

This is good to know - and like i said my preference is simply for it to be moddable or configurable - since the current settings are clearly in place for performance reasons - anyway, i am glad that it is in the system - thanks!
