Thrusters should stop using fuel when speed limit is reached

Thrusters should stop using fuel when speed limit is reached. You are not getting any faster so it doesn't make sense that the energy/fuel just disappears. That way you could hold space during takeoff without wasting fuel.

Currently you have to use thruster override or tap space from time to time when the speed is too low, which also means you can't have inertia dampeners on. (Which can cause you to drift sideways without noticing)

To make it a bit more realistic you could also make the thruster flame decrease when the max speed is reached.

Why can you not have thruster override and inertial dampeners on at the same time? I do it all the time. Thrust to speed, cut dampeners, cut engines. Need to change course: activate override, re-orient, turn on dampeners. I'm not disagreeing with this notion, to be clear... Once you reach max speed there shouldn't be any further energy required to maintain that speed... unless your grid is acted upon by an outside force... was just wondering why you couldn't use dampeners and override at the same time?

I don't know about now, but I recall in the past if you used override and dampers, the dampers would fight the override.

Why not just add ship options and keybinds or toolbar buttons that :

  • "Disable Dampers not aligned against Gravity" (i.e. hover)
  • "Disable Dampers aligned opposite with the direction of movement." (Let me fly in a linear direction without holding a key)

@Gwindalmir It hasn't been that way for some time that I'm aware of. As I stated, I use dampeners and override all the time.

I just turn off my backward thrusters so that the ship still fly's straight and the dampers to not resist the override. I bind the backward thrusters to the 1 key on my movement toolbar and forward thrust override to the 2 and 3 keys on the same toolbar. Now the ship will maneuver like a "plane" always using thrusters to keep you going the way the nose is pointed. It also allows you to pitch forward in gravity and let gravity accelerated you down and forward and "glide" and then level off with gravity and coast.
