Second cockpit breaks ALL ship controls permanently

Investigating

Read the steps for replication, this is not a newbie user error.

Using a second cockpit while the first one is not marked as main permanently makes all present and future cockpits unusable for navigation, even after removal of the first/second/both cockpits. Any cockpit will report "Seat/remote with higher priority is already occupied".

This happens constantly and deterministically. Judging by the reddit posts [1] [2], this problem appeared at least 7 years ago.

Steps for replication: (creative, no mods, default settings)

  1. On a large grid platform, place a cockpit, a battery, and a gyroscope.
  2. Sit in the cockpit and wiggle a platform to ensure your input is handled.
  3. Place a second cockpit and sit in it. Wiggle a bit, but don't leave the cockpit.
  4. Open the control panel and configure the first cockpit as the main one.
  5. Observe that you can't wiggle in the second cockpit — as expected ✔
  6. Sit in the first, now main, cockpit — observe that there is a message "Seat/remote with higher priority is already occupied" and that you can't manipulate the platform ❌

Further user actions in a non-creative world cannot fix this issue. Removing any of the cockpits don't help. Completely removing/destroying all cockpits don't help. My second rover-base is now static defense because I can't make a simple robotic arm controller in an engineering game.

I try to wiggle every time I enter a cockpit

I thought I had this bug, and maybe...... Anyway, just started a "star system" new game. Found a Cobalt rock. Build a basic base

  • 4 windmills and a battery
  • basic refinery and basic assembler both upgraded to standard refinery and assembler.
  • One small cargo container
Thought a cockpit on top the cargo box would kill 2 birds with one stone. -- Recharge power and hydrogen while dumping stones for the refiner and thinking about what to build next.
Hoped out and thought I needed to move my respawn pod a bit away, but it was DOA. The terminal indicated that the battery on board still had charge, but everything was non-responsive.
Ran a few troubleshoot searches, and nothing seemed to fix it, until I loaded the Admin screen and enabled creative mode tools. Slapped a few new batteries on the pod, and it sprang to life.
    Fixed? Fingers crossed.

Did you place a second cockpit onto the same grid or..?

Actually, I'd just built a ramp on the station grid, and drove the respawn pod up onto it, thinking I could grid tie (hinges, pistons, merge block) the two if I could get the set up right. I couldn't, so I just slapped a cockpit on the station gross while the pod was parked in it.
