Space Engineers server browser causes my router to reboot/reset (Sky WiFi FTTC)

Livio Bergomi shared this bug 21 days ago
Won't Fix

Platform: PC (Steam)

Game version: Space Engineers (latest on Steam)

Network: Home FTTC, Sky WiFi router (ISP-provided)

Connection type: Ethernet (also happens on Wi-Fi, if applicable)

Issue summary

Whenever I open the Multiplayer server list / server browser in Space Engineers (the in-game list that searches for servers), my router reboots/resets. This happens before joining any server — just entering the server browser and letting it populate triggers it.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch Space Engineers on PC (Steam).
  2. Go to Multiplayer.
  3. Open Join Game / Server Browser (the screen that loads the server list).
  4. Wait while the list starts fetching servers.
  5. Within a short time, the router reboots (internet drops for all devices; router lights cycle; connection returns after reboot).

Expected result

Server list loads normally and the internet connection stays stable.

Actual result

Router restarts/reboots consistently when the server list starts searching/loading.

Frequency

Reproducible / happens almost every time (adjust if needed).

What we tried

  • Rebooted router and PC.
  • Tested other games/apps: no router reboot.
  • Happens specifically with Space Engineers server browser (the server list query phase).
  • (Optional) Tried limiting background downloads / closing other apps — no change.

Additional info

  • This looks like the server browser may trigger a very high number of network requests (possibly many simultaneous connections / NAT table overload) and the router firmware crashes/reboots.
  • If you need logs: we can provide Space Engineers logs and router event logs (if accessible on this router model).

Request

  • Is this a known issue with the Space Engineers server browser (e.g., burst of connections)?
  • Any recommended workaround (server browser settings, Steam networking settings, limiting queries, direct connect options)?
  • Any guidance on what logs/metrics you need to confirm (game logs, packet capture, router logs)?

Attachments (if available)

  • Router model/firmware version screenshot
  • Space Engineers log files from %AppData%\SpaceEngineers\
  • Video showing router reboot when opening server browser

Hello Livio,

Thank you for the detailed report.

Based on the behavior you described, this issue appears to be more closely related to how the router handles network traffic rather than an issue within the game itself.

As workarounds, we recommend trying the following:

  • Clear Steam download cache:
In Steam, go to Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache, then restart Steam and try again.
  • Restart Steam completely:
Fully close Steam (make sure it is not running in the background), then start it again before launching Space Engineers.
  • Check for router firmware updates:
If available from your ISP, installing the latest firmware may improve stability.
  • Test with a different network path (if possible):
As a temporary test, trying a different network (for example, a VPN or mobile hotspot) can help confirm whether the issue is router-specific.
  • Test with a different router (if available):
Using a third-party router or placing the ISP router into bridge/modem mode can help avoid these limitations.
  • Use filters in the Advanced Server Search:
    - In the Join Game's screen Servers tab, click on Advanced buttons and apply one or more filters like, Game Mode (Survival or Creative), Has Password, Ping, Mods etc. This will limit how many servers are queried and displayed.
    - Apply the filters by clicking the Search button. Allow the filtered list to load and check whether the router remains stable.
  • Use Direct Join instead of the server browser (if you want to join any specific server only):
Go to Join Game screen → click on Direct Connect, put the server’s IP address and port there. Click on Connect. This avoids the server list query entirely.

Please let us know if any of these step's help.

Kind Regards,
