Cockpit radiation blocker?

Not Enough Votes

Update 207 introduced many great features, but one addition has caused significant frustration among players on Official servers: reactor radiation. The concept makes sense—damaged reactors should emit radiation—but the current implementation has issues. Players are taking radiation damage even while sitting in a fully intact cockpit.

In any combat situation—PVP or PVE—or even after a collision, reactor damage is common, especially on smaller ships where space is limited and reactors sit close to the cockpit. Long PVP engagements can last an hour or more, and dying from radiation mid-fight essentially guarantees losing your ship. This has led some players to stop fighting or leave Officials entirely.

Suggestion:

Consider making cockpits fully radiation-proof as long as they remain at 100% integrity. If the cockpit starts taking damage, then radiation could logically begin to leak through. This adjustment would maintain realism while preventing unavoidable and discouraging deaths during combat.

Factorum Shielded Cockpit. uses panels to increase durability and has a radiation shielding effect. Job done. Keen sort it out yeah? P.S. Cockpit can be 200 PCU and have conveyors top bottom and rear because we really have few T shaped conveyor blocks in the game.

Id be fine with the current Radiation, if a Level 5 (or a theoretical Level 6) Engineer was immune. Alt Trons Idea is great too, because it would give a real reason to go for Factorum Signals.

I'd rather have the Anti-Radiation MedKit effect increase from 10 to 15 or 20 minutes.

I wouldn't mind if you could actually craft anti radiation meds

I like the idea of the factorum cockpit. It will make factorum parts and global encounters more valuable. But I don't think it should provide 100% shielding, because radiation leakage brings some interesting engineering challenges. You may choose to place reactors further from a cockpit, but that will make a ship potentially larger. You may place reactors near the cockpit and use anti rads when reactors start leaking. Or place them somewhere in the middle making radiation rate non zero, but low enough so you can ignore it for multiple minutes. Or even have a crew or emergency reactor repair system.

From a development point of view, I think changing the rad med effective time is the most cost effective way of patching things without doing it 1-2 updates later. Literally changing a number, done, patch it. No weeks of testing new features.

I can grind a bunch of these rad meds, no problem

My opinion would be to keep the rad kits for outside of the cockpit. The cockpit already protects you from solar radiation, why not reactor radiation?

The idea that radiation isn't blocked or even dampened by several meters of solid steel is weird to me, and yeah on PvP grids radiation becomes a problem that's essentially impossible to engineer around. Implementation of radiation but no means of shielding yourself from said radiation (short of a comically difficult to acquire anti-rad med pack) seems like a strange choice.

Share this link with others. Lets try and get this passed and implemented! We need at least 50 votes for it to be "considered" by Keen.

Radiation was a good addition imo, and giving us the Radiation Meds was nice foresight, though I believe Rad Meds are being used in places where Keen didnt expect, like in my safezone while printing or tinkering. In...my....safezone... You know, the one that can stop a sabot, prevent me from cracking my head open on an armor block or bounce a 20mil kg warship off like a rubber ducky. But all that juice and it just cant block that UV. Safezone should have option to block UV for additional energy consumption, and obviously the answer is a combat cockpit, thats tankier, has more ports and costs more. Gwails input on Rad Med timer increase is an okay "fix" as long as its intended use is to hold us over until a real solution thats balanced and well thought out comes along.

I support the idea of "we gotta have something better than a syringe" to fight reactor radiation. PvP or PvE -- reactor radiation is quite hard to deal with, and you either gotta be fast to grind down the radiative thing on your damaged grid, or you use a rare medkit.

A some kind of shielding mechanic would be good. IRL radiation is negated by dense matter, such as concrete or certain metals. The laws of such negation aren't particularly hard to implement IMO.
