Host for a multiplayer world using a VPN causes people who join to be stuck in spectator mode.

Need More Information

As title states whenever friends join my world and I forget to disconnect from my VPN whenever they join they end up being stuck in specator mode. Found this out when we started a new save and through a fair bit of troubleshooting we found that to be the issue. This has persisted as we've gone through new saves and various set ups for modding even with no mods installed. That is why no world link because I don't think it is a save related bug. Just before submitting this I had started up a current save while forgetting to turn off my VPN again and they wound up being stuck in spectator when they joined. Also while I was connected to the VPN they tried different joining methods available for Steam and the issue persisted. We both play SE through Steam.

Hello Engineer,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the forum.

The behavior you’re describing, where friends join your game but remain stuck in spectator mode, is an expected side effect of using a VPN rather than a bug within the game itself. Multiplayer relies on Steam networking, and running the game while connected to a VPN can interfere with the connection handshake. When that handshake fails, joining players are placed in spectator mode by default.

We also want to let you know that an issue related to joining a friend’s game or lobby via the Steam Overlay has been fixed in our latest 1.207.022 hotfix as reported on this thread. Please update the game and check if the issue still occurs when not using a VPN.

If the issue persists after updating and playing without VPN, please provide us with a screen recording/video showing the issue, log files from both the host/you and client/player joining your game at the time the issue occurs, and any other relevant information that could help us investigate further.

  • You/host and all players can access log files by typing %appdata% into the Windows search bar → navigate to Roaming\SpaceEngineers.

Kind regards,
