Barbarians always land first hit

In fighting barbarians, even if you're blocking in the right direction when combat is initiated, they will always land the first hit.

This is still the case if you have hit them with a crossbow bolt as well.

Wow! I thought I was just bad or something this whole time. I'm definitely seeing this happen to me as well.

same here, every time when barbarians spawn, their first swing with weapon hit you, i avoid it through closed doors and when they attack to door after then you can defend yourself in combat, hint: barbarians can't destroy Palisade Gate

my problem is the volume of barbarians attacking my regular one stone block wood door during the early part of setting up a new claim on a new server (or since 0.7 all single doors are vulnerable!). the studded club and rusted sword barbarians do damage to those doors, and the new repair system means i need to keep the exact components to repair that (metal pieces, stone, sticks, and a hammer). its a rather laborious and problematic defense now keeping a single frame door up... a couple of times the barbarians took that door down to almost complete destruction - to the point you could walk around the wood door part! so this inspired me to do better than just a single door and constantly running to protect or repair it - we all do but usually it takes a couple of hours at least on a new server before you can put up the big gates... for me it's the Wooden Portcullis that is key to the new 0.7 aggressive barbarians i love so much.
they cannot damage the gate whereas the single doors (thin stone wall or the larger single cube door) get chopped down easily. i keep looking at the damage from barbarians on the Portcullis and its always zero. That could be a bug because at like 2400 strength i imagine a barbarian with a lousy studded club should still be doing like 5-10 damage a swing or life span? i see barbarians with no weapons and wonder if the server is set to be active with no one online, maybe these barbarians spent so much time trying to hit a big gate that it took their weapon wear down to disintegrate? are the weaponless barbarians a result of them wearing out their weapons on gates they cant damage? i digress...
the Portcullis allows me to swing at the barbarians then back off, timing my swing before i step forward and strike, and waiting for the barbarian to finish his swing... damage can be done through the Portcullis, i am not sure about crossbow but i just used a studded club to save the bolts... i've killed over 30 with this method so far! what is key for me is that i can see the barbarian clearly through the Portcullis where the other gates we can't. So i recommend as the primary contact gate to block and kill barbarians one install the Portcullis asap.
once you hear them chopping away at it, take your time, they aren't actually doing any damage... i have even seen barbarians accidently kill each other due to accidental swing damage, tell me why else would a barbarian drop on his own (no AI defender active). i think they accidentally get hit by the other barbarian at the Portcullis. as you may not know it you are moving around inside your own castle the barbarians at the gate are slightly adjusting their move to match you. its during that chaos that you can have barbarians accidentally killing each other i believe.
TLDR: again here is the sure fire way to kill barbarians using a Portcullis: take your time, hold down your mouse swing but do not release, wait for the barbarian to finish his swing, move forward until you get a red lit hit box then swing, you will either do damage to the barbarian/miss/hit the portcullis. then step back before the barbarian swings again... repeat until he drops, often his weapons will roll onto your side of the Portcullis making clean up nice and easy! the key takeaway is a timing action of making the barbarians miss and before they can recover for their next swing you strike!
[ attached file -- imho if you know barbarians are around, build a stick frame little hideaway - for me in the attached picture i had placed a single stone angled piece next to a road with lots of barbarians... i simply walk up the slope to the top and can either headshot with the crossbow all the barbarians or fast travel out and away... ] {i cant post pics or links something weird with the blog settings}

I have this bug around 90% of the time, I recall once or twice I've blocked the first blow. I think it might be lag entering the combat state and/or perhaps holding block too early before the combat state is entered
